New Owner With a Question about the 2001 X5 4.4
 

Hey there! I have been using this forum as a research tool for X5 research and am now the proud owner of a 2001 X5 4.4. This was not the year that I originally wanted but when a friend made me an awesome deal I couldn't refuse.

I am taking the vehicle into the dealership in about a week and getting the 60,000 mile service (68,000 currently) and found out that it is still under the CPO warranty until 2/28/07. Are there any specific things that I should have them check out on this vehicle before it is out of warranty?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get it into tip top shape.

Congratz on the ride, however there isn't really a whole lot BMW will "check out" prior to an issue arising. Just have the 60K maintenance done and keep an eye on all things. Generally, window regulators go bye-bye fast in X5's so keep moving your windows :)

Here's one that they probably won't check, take off the eng. plastic cover and check that the crankvent hoses are not cracked, it's two hoses in the back of the eng., if they have holes in them you will notice right away.
I have the same X you have.

tell them your transmission is not shifting smooth. Maybe you'll get a new one. by far that is one of the most expensive repairs.

Are all your dash lights full and bright? No dead pixels? Congrats!

CV boots are another common problem.

Have the Stlr "run your key" and it's BMW dlr-done service
history should show up. It's a bunch of numerical line items;
ask the SA to explain what's been done and ask his "advice"
on "what might be next, etc.". Sometimes they are convivial
and helpful to a new owner, sometimes not.
GL on your new X. We have an '01 also, and while not
glitch free, it's running well w/58K miles.

68K - water pump gives out around this time, I had them replace mine (no warranty) as preventative maintenance as if this goes it may really screw up the engine - unfortunately, the only replacement is OEM (with plastic impeller) - the 3.0 owners can get an aftermarket water pump with stainless steel impeller

check if belts and battery have been replaced - I'd also suggest oil changes at 7500-9000 (depending on your driving habits) - It's not the oil I worry about, but the oil filter - 15000 is a long time to filter out contaminents

Thanks for all the help! The vehicle is in really good condition. I haven't found anything to complain about yet. Thanks for the heads up on the various items that can go wrong. I will be watching them very carefully. I will let you all know how my checkup goes!
