18s are stiff too

17s are perfect from the 01-03 era.

If 18"s provide a softer ride than the 19"s, then does that mean the 20"s provide a stiffer ride than the 19"s?

During the test drive of our car we also felt it was too stiff, we drove it a second time and compared it to a touareg and a Q7 which both were not handling as well as the X5 so we decided to adapt our driving over bumpy roads and enjoy the sportpackage handling.

Stick with the 19's and adapt your speed over higher bumps a little.

Yes. Larger rim = less tire sidewall, in order to keep the overall rolling diameter the same. And less tire sidewall = less tire flex = stiffer ride. If you do the calculation, the overall rolling diameter between the 17", 18", 19", and 20" wheels/tires are relatively the same in the BMW setup!
