Oil change at dealership should run ~ 100 and change so $270 is well over and above. Did the work order list oil change or oil service or was there any other work done?

As far as the check brake linings, as others have said your pads are worn to the point that they have triggered the sensors - no orange to red. Many dvided opinions her as to whether or not to change rotors, pads etc. at same time.

As far as costs go, plan for ~ $1,300 at dealership if you need pads, rotors, sensors on all four. More than likely it will be just one set, probably front. Local mechanic will cost you 1/2 -2/3 of dealership.

I'm not sure if it was oil service. How much more detailed is that? and i was told that i would have to change all 4 of my pads, rotors and sensors. Would anyone recommend me possibly going to an outsider to have this done and if i do. what should i look out for?

the dealership should have given you a service invoice. if they didn't, you need to ask for it.

Good luck with the brakes. I remember reading on the site somewhere about a brake web site that had all you need for great prices. That might be an option too - buy your parts and pay only the labor to install them at a independent shop.

One of the other NY member on this forum may be able to recommend a good independant shop.
If you are going to do it yourself contact Dave at Zeckhausen - very highly recommended both on this and other BMW forums as a source for pads rotors etc.

It cost me about $52 to change my own oil.

8 quarts of oil = $40
Filter from BMW = $12

So the dealerships need to make a profit... so dont expect less than 100. Mechanics get paid $20+ and the shop gets half of the rest so add another $50 to the total.

cchino623, usually the brake light will illuminate yellow when there is an ABS braking problem (along with the yellow ABS light). Red means the pad sensor sees the minimum for brake pad material left and it's time for new brakes. Try to get a price from another local dealer if possible or a good independent in your area - but they need to know how to do brakes on a Bimmer.

well i definitely want to thank all you guys today. Found the invoice in my vehicle. it states it was an oil service. but then i wonder if they were supposed to inspect other things in the oil service... why didnt they catch the brake problem. I spoke to an independent today and he quoted me half the $1200 that the dealer stated it would be. He is supposed to be a trusted mechanic of a good friend. he said he would also run my car into his diagnostic machine. (i forget the name of the machine). thanks everyone.
