Brake light message Red

I'm new here so hello everyone. This is my situation - i took my 03 x5 into a certified Bmw service department for an oil change which ended up costing me about 270 with tax. wasnt sure if that was too much but i did it because my X neeeded the oil change. At the end of the day i picked my X up and parked at home. The following day i noticed the BRAKE light red and an error message that read " check brake lining". Right away i thought maybe the mechanic screwed up my brake lining or something. Called them and the said to bring the X in so they can check her out. Now they are telling me that their error was a lack of communication from mechanic to representative and they should have told me about my break pads being at the minimum thickness. and that they will have to change my pads, rotors, sensor and other stuff for $1200. Any suggestions on whether or not i should take it else where or how do i find out if it was their error and not just a coincidence and does the BRAKE light go straight to red or does it turn yellow first normally?

The brake light coming on means that you need to change your brake pads. If you know an independent shop, I would try their first to see what they would charge you.

how many miles are on your car?

$270 is a lot for an oil change...it's like $30 at chain stores.

While $270 is a lot, I suspect that there was more involved than an oil change. We would need to see what was checked/inspected/etc as part of the oil service.

BMW dealers typically offer an oil service (full inspection) as well as an oil change (which is just the oil and filter).

$30 at chain stores is not comparable to an oil service, and it certainly doesn't include BMW warranty-approved oil, or an OEM filter. It is misleading to suggest that the two services are comparable.

$270.00 sounds high. I've read about $110.00 here. What else did they do? Yeah get a second opinion on your brakes to be sure.

Welcome to X5 World...

yes that is true...i went to goodyear/just tires to have my tire patched a couple of days ago and the service was not as nice as at the dealership. the mechanics don't wipe their hands, and they drove my car on the wrong side of the street because it was more convenient.

how much does a regular oil service cost at the dealership?

Boston X5 4.4 02-21-2007 05:17 PM

$30 for a full synthetic oil change and suitable filter

the proper sythetic motor oil is about $5-7 per quart depending on which dealer and the x takes about two quarts...isn't all you need to do is to drain the oil from the bottom of the engine bay, and add more oil? or is there more?

cchino, are you sure it was only an oil change?

More like 8 quarts than 2 + replacement filter.

cchino623 02-21-2007 05:58 PM

i'm sure it was an oil change. But they did say they were replacing the microfilter and what ever else goes with that. But does anyone else think its fishy that the next day the brake light came on red? i mean isnt it supposed to be yellow first or am i wrong?
