Welcome! I want to see some photos when you get it. I also just bought a 2001 4.4i and it runs perfect, I just love it.

Unfortunately, there are scam artists out there. Ebay does not police their advertisers as well as they should. I'd definitely contact them and get their ass in gear about yanking this guy off their website and to look into criminal fraud charges.
As a person who bought a 2001 X5 4.4 on Ebay, it took a month of emails for both of us(buyer & seller) to convince ourselves each of us was on the level. Good luck in your hunt. |
Well it is looking like I am not supposed to own an X5...yesterday I went back to my dealership where they have an '02 X5 4.4 they took in as a trade a couple of weeks ago. Very, very clean with just about every available option. I want to check it out further before I purchase it, so the salesman agrees to let me take it home (about an hour away) and keep it overnight to completely check it out.
I get there yesterday afternoon and before I leave in it, the salesman notes that the battery light is on. We pull out the multimeter and sure enough-the alternator has decided to take a crap. It just seems to be one thing after another conspiring to keep me from owning one. They are going to replace the alternator, but knowing them if I still was interested in purchasing it they would add the cost of the replacement-which I told them that I would not pay a dime more than what we had already agreed to even after the alternator was replaced. Now I did plenty of research here on all of the issues that the X5's have before I decided to go this route, but while I was there I was talking to the tech that has worked on some of my previous BMW's and he was mentioning all of the same issues that are listed on this forum. He said he loves them because he makes a ton of money off the repairs, but he was trying to steer me away from buying one-even though I do my own maintenance and repairs. He specifically said that if I did buy one, to stay away from the V8 models due to their issues and go with the more reliable 3.0. This was also said by the parts guy and the service manager. So, I guess my search continues... |
IMHO, I think the 4.4 is the best engine for the X5. It gets better mileage than both the 3.0 & 4.8 (not sure about the 4.6) Both of mine have worked flawlessly. (of course, now having said that, lightening will strike). But it's all about finding what you want. The 2001 sticker says 13/17 mpg, but I get 12-15/17-19 even with the Dinan setup. (the lowest # being due to too much listening to the exhaust roar off the line) My 2006 gets 16-18/20-22mpg. My experience is the 4.4 handles the 5000# wgt better than the 3.0 and has a larger towing capacity. Again, just my humble opinion.

I have been getting 16.8 in my 4.8is and I havent exactly been using the cruise control.

I know there is a loaded Black 2001 4.4 X5 in madison at the Benz dealership that also owns the BMW dealership across the street. It has nav. and the trailer tow package. The sheet they put in the window says it has 62K miles on it and they are asking $23,900 on the window sticker. You could probably pick it up for 20K to 21K without a problem. It looks like a nice X. It is at the Zimbrick Benz/Porche/Audi dealership in Madison, WI. Just food for thought. www.zimbrick.com It does not show up on their website yet but I think they got it in stock last week.

Just another update-it looks like my search has finally ended. In my post previous to this one I mentioned the '02 X5 at the dealership that the alternator died on last week. Well, they replaced the alternator so I drove back up there yesterday to take it home and check it out. It does have a few issues-coolant leak (which I already knew about) due to bad valley pan gasket and both outer CV joint boots are torn. Luckily, there is no clicking from the CV joints themselves so replacing them with the BMW repair kit should be enough. As far as the valley pan gasket goes, I have worked on enough of my BMW's to know I can handle this job myself.
Now I know all of that sounds like a big negative, and it's not great news, but since I have a dealer license I am getting it at a pretty sweet price. The only other negative is that it has chromed 20" replica Style 168's-and they have got to go! Anyone interested? |
wow makes me feel good that i got my '00 4.4i 64Kmi for $17K! Tho my pops gave me a deal :) By the way Madison is a fun town lol.
