No chance. I need something that actually does something when you put the accelerator down. I drive an old Audi A8 right now and there is nothing better than encountering a hill and heading up it at the same speed while the revs don't change in the slightest... Hill? What hill?

Can't lose that kind of performance.

Yes, two boosters and a rear facing should work if the rear facing doesn't use one of those wide snap-in bases.
RX300 = Minivan in SUV disguise

x2 on the RX300 = minivan , add the Acura MDX.

x2 on the snap-in base. The snap in bases are very convinient, but take up a lot of room. The problem with the rear facing in the center is that you will not be able to use the anchors. A bottom only booster in the center may work b/c you have a lap/shoulder belt.

Actually, you can use the anchors for the middle seat. Just use the ones for the outer seats. You end up doubling up on one anchor if you have a seat on the outside, but they are plenty strong enough to hold the load in the event of an accident.

Graco makes a baby car seat with removable base that is quite a bit narrower than many of the others on the market. Has a 90 deg twist on the carrying handle too, makes it a lot easier to carry. That's what I have, and with that in the middle and the booster seat on the outside, there is still room for an adult to ride in the back seat, though it is a bit tight.

As a final answer, I put three car seats in the back of my X5 last night:
A toddler seat (with built in five-point harness) on left side, a rear facing baby seat with removable base and carrying handle in the middle, and a booster seat on the right side.

Verdict: The all fit, but its really tight. Biggest problem is buckling the seat belt on the booster seat, you have to squeeze your hand down between the booster seat and baby seat to put the buckle in, and its a PITA.

I also put all three seats in my e23 728i, and I had the same problem. Not quite enough width.

So you can do it, but I think that you will find that any car is going to have the same problem.
A full size american pickup truck fits three across just fine, though! You'd look good cruising britain in a big Chevy or Dodge.:rofl:

I have the Radian 80 car seat ... it's nice & skinny

I don't have 3 car seats or the need for 3, but I do have a Radian 80 car seat and the seat part is nice and skinny. I have it rear facing and the seat back fits between the front seats, so hopefully that will give you an idea of its size. I figure I could get 3 of them in the back of my X if I had to.

The Radian 80 is made by Sunshine Kids. I'm sure 3 of these would cost you less (in money and negative comments) than a minivan!

I hope that helps!

Thanks for all your help, folks. I really appreciate it. Have found the ML to be a better fit for three car seats than the X5 - centre seat is much wider and the two outer seats are also a better shape - but the ML doesn't exactly drive particularly well...

Decisions, decisions...

Throw them in the cargo area and get the pet divider screen. Thats what I plan on doing. I'm still looking for a kids dog costume. You know just in case I get pulled over or something...

I was thinking something along these lines

Cute. Is there a secure fixing in the back for that fire hydrant? Wouldn't want it to be unsafe, after all.
