beware!!!! power!!!
damn ....
i was at gas station anhour ago. didn't fully turn off the engine while fueling. took me about 3minutes to get filled up. but th e thing is radio and ac was turned on. i didn't think battery will drain this quick but it did. i wasn't able to start the damn engine. so i asked him if i can use jump cable. he said he doesn't have 1 for use, but they sell the cables . so i paid $14.00 to buy it and it started. i ran freeway for 30mins now it seems all good. let's all becareful |
the engine was on?
|
Glad you got it going... but... I suggest you trickle charge that battery and have your electrical system checked. There is no way a fully charged battery would fail in 3 minutes. Good luck.
|
i recently installed angel eyes, i'm afraid if it occured this problem.
or maybe it's time to change battery? my car is 2003 3.0i dang =p |
Maybe you weakened the battery during your angel eyes installation (left doors open, played radio, checked the AE's without the motor running, etc). It may be that you just need to fully charge the battery. On this site you can find proper battery voltages that you can verify with an inexpensive multimeter from your local auto store, Walmart, etc. There is also good info on chargers like the Battery Tender. The battery could be going out as you mentioned (as it is an '03), but it probably just needs a good overnight trickle to bring it back to full charge. That is what I would do first - test it and charge it. You have nothing to lose.

thanx alot for info ncx.
let me tell you the full story. i had halogen light and converted to xenon. my angel eyes are LEDs with light boxes. i installed em 3days ago my self. i wired them with low beam wires. didn't wire them to parklight because voltage changes when give signal that's what i heard. and also relay packs for xenon conversions are wired to low beams as well to avoid check sginals. i currently not receiving any warning signals. one of my fog light went out 2weeks ago. and i replaced them today with MTEC h11 super white bulbs. i drove with head and fog lights on today about 4hours. and then went to gas station and this thing happened. i had to run freeway about an hour to come back home. rested at home about an hour. and i came out to go to laundromat, car started smooth. and again i drove my car about 20minutes parked the car to drop off my clothes and waitted inside the car about 30minutes until it gets done. after 30mins, turned off my car, walked into laundromat ,picked up the clothes, tried to start engine, and it won't start again.... jumped car again... came back home through freeway..(so battery might get charged) turned off engine immediately when i got back home.. waitted about 3minutes and engine started smooth again... it seems battery gets charged when car runs, but if i park the car with engine on it won't start... is it because my battery didn't get fully charged? or is my battery draining when i'm idling? ha...ha...ha.. help me |
I had a recent similar experience. Running the A/C would kill the battery. Turned out to be a dying alternator. A load test at a local auto parts store will prob'ly show whether it's a weak battery or a sickly alternator.
|
If your battery died after 3, 10, or 20 minutes with everything on, your battery is weak or your charging system has a problem. Is it your original battery? If so, replace it and work from there.
|
that's what i'm afraid of...i too have an '03 3.0 and i believe when i purchased it...it still has the original battery. i am just waiting for the day that it will die on me.
happened to me once with another suv. its funny because i look at the dash to see if the battery light would go on every time i start engine but it never showed especially when i know its been 3-4 years with the same battery. so when i got out of the supermarket and tried to start. it wouldn't. lucky for me i was in the same plaza where there's an auto parts store and they jumped my suv right up and i went straight to get a new battery at another auto parts store. now my question is, will the X5 or any BMW show an idicator light that battery is running low or i will just have to find out the hard way? |
Most likely the dreaded "clunk, clunk" some morning. If it's that old you'll be hearing it soon. My '01 is on the third battery at least. There was a VW battery in it when I bought it that failed soon thereafter.
|
so its the "clunk, clunk" that i have to watch out for huh. hmmm, i really don't notice the clunk at the times that my battery in other cars have gone though. what i notice is a weird thing going on with the electrical or lights that tips me off some of those occasions...but that's sometimes...not all the time
thanks for the heads up |
I would at least buy and carry one of the jump start/electric compressor boxes to keep in your car in case it goes at a time or in a place when you cannot get it "jumped".
If I suspected something was up with the battery or coming soon I'd just replace it from a good retailer. Should only cost between $65 - $95 and most places will even fit it for free and the warrant/price sure beats the dealer.. |
Just buy a battery and eliminate that problem!

Replace battery with......

you need mad CCA. I would recommend (as I have installed) the Optima red or yellow top's #34 which have 800 CCA (CA1000) A little pricey around $180 (AutoZone) but far superior than the OEM ones. Plus they are maintenance free as well:thumbup: |
there was a thread here before about the absolute close to OEM battery brand replacement with the same if not better specs than the OEM battery...I didn't know Optimas fit the X5s. Its good to know...thanks!
it's also good to know that they are that pricey! :yikes: |
i checked voltage myself from autozone,
and voltage won't go up more than 11.9v even if i give it a gas. fukin alreanator output has low power, it doesn't get charge well . that's what they said. so i found 1 independant shop and made deal. oem remanufactured alternator(as all body shops does) + battery for $580 no tax. picking up tomorrow.... i hate this... let's all becareful always shut off the engine fully while you waitting for something =p |
Glad you checked your system before you bought and killed another battery. You should be in good shape now
|
I have an '03 X5 as well and just recently replaced my battery a month ago. Your battery is probably just due to be changed now anyway. Mine lasted a while as I didn't change it since I bought the car new. It went about 70k miles with a lot of AC driving down here in hotlanta.

Can Bad Battery Kill The Alternator?
|
I would imagine if you keep driving on a bad battery it could cause damage to your alternator as it puts a lot of extra strain on the alternator. I would just recommend taking it to a battery place and letting them check if your alternator is indeed in bad shape (they should be able to do it quickly and free) especially if you buy the battery from them. As for the battery get the one made by East Penn Manufacturing as it is the same manufacturer as the OEM batteries and they fit in perfectly in the x5.
Changing the battery is a pain though as you have to pull it out from under the spare tire well but not too hard. Good luck. |
thanx 03,
but my car is in shop alrdy. for change of alternator and battery. cost me $580. lalalala i got fuked up again alalala |
Man, battery problems seem to be a re-occuring thread. This is not an item you wait for it to die. If you get freezing temps in winter, buy a new one every 4 yrs. If you don't experience freezing temps, buy a new one every 5 years. (I buy mine anytime after 4 yrs) And get a 5yr guarantee battery, not some cheap bargain. If you don't DIY, then use the opportunity to have them check the charging system (it's usually free). Preventative maintenance! This way things get done when you have time for it, not when you HAVE to make time for it. Let me say it again, the X5 is an electrical hog. We all have gotten used to earlier cars when electrical demands were not so great and you could play the radio for hours while washing/waxing the car or at the beach. NOT with this vehicle. I always make sure everything is turned off before turning off the ignition, everytime. I treat my X5 like an airplane, where there are checklists of what to do for takeoff, landing, & shutdown. A few extra seconds can really save you some big headaches.
