That's not happened to me yet in my X5 but it did in my old ML430 benz. It seems that would be a safety issue. It should be a recall if it's heating up to a point that it burns skin.

My car (2001) is out of warranty and has had this exact problem for a couple of years. Any suggestion for a fix? The cost of a new leather cover for the back of the seat is $850. I was wondering if I could just replace that heating element, or maybe slide some insulation between the leather and the element.

I believe that is the pescribed fix from the dealer. Just replace the heating element. My X is out of factory warranty and the heated seats aren't covered in the extended warranty, so I'll have to pay to get it fixed or do it myself.
If you decide to do the repair yourself, post some pics and tech advice on the procedure to help out us noobs so we can save some repair cash. I was quoted the price to fix was about $600. It shouldn't be that difficult. Unplug the wiring harness, pull out the seat, remove the seat cover, remove/replace the element, re-install cover/ seat/ wiring harness. Sound right?:popcorn:

I think the heater is part of the leather cover and not available otherwise.
