URGENT: steering rack lower outer ball joint

Hi

I have my car up of the ground and thought this job would take 30 mins but I've hit a snag (as usual http://www.x5drivers.co.uk/images/sm...on_biggrin.gif)

I've managed to replace the unit and am tightening the locking nut. However the nut is getting tougher to turn and I am a bit afraid of stripping the thread. Should I press the joint into the bottom of the suspension first? Am I doing this correctly or is there a tip someone can throw my way?
