It really depends on your driving style. I say go for the 4.4! The inline-6 is a great engine, but if you are the type of person who likes to occasionally stomp the gas, the V8 is the only way to go. The 4.4 also comes standard with more features than the 3.0 (leather seats, rear self-leveling suspension, 18" wheels, automatic climate control, etc.).

I have also read that the earlier 3.0's without the sport package had some issues with the wheels slightly comming off of the ground in emergency lane change maneuvers. I am pretty sure this is pre-Xdrive models.

I decided on an 02 4.4 with the sport package and love it. My only regret is that I didn't hold out for a 4.6! I was aware that the V8's were prone to a few engine issues like oil leaks and such, but once I drove one I completely forgot about all of that. The fact the X is under an extended warranty also helps! Get the warranty especially if you go with the V8. Mine has already paid for itself and I have 2 years or 15,000 left.
