i'm in the process of doing this shortly... ur current tips have to be cut and then weld on the 4.6is tips. should be very straight forward... i do have a question on whether the bumper needs to be taken off? as i'm also wanting to do a resonator to straight pipe all at once since i'm underneath already

sobi, looks like what they did is modify the RActive tips (see post #1) to look like 4.6is tips, close but not quite... and too expensive...

I had my muffler guy cut the slanted/stock tips off, leaving about an inch to weld the Y pipes on to. I didn't need to, but I went ahead and spray painted the inside of the Y pipes a flat black color before I had my muffler guy cut the Y pipes to the right length, too...

*** these are approximate areas where to cut the Y pipes... ... and what they look like when installed...

The key is the Y pipes and finding a good muffler shop and person who will cut the Y pipes, weld them onto the muffler, and then weld the 4.6 tips onto the Y pipes. The place/guy i picked near work is accustomed to working on BMW's, but this was his first attempt on this type of mod on an X5, believe it or not! The tips were just a little crooked on his first attempt, but the guy was such a perfectionist that he took it off once, tweaked it just a little bit until the tips were nice and straight!

The tips aren't cheap (even though our sponsor Morristown BMW sell them at a price no other dealer can beat!). Including installation cost, some people may think it's a bit more than they're willing to pay for "the look", but I wanted it done right. Besides no other tips out there in the market came even close to the OEM 4.6is exhaust look. With the staggered, bigger and wider 20" wheels, the slanted stock exhaust tips looked too wimpy. The 4.6is tips was the way to go for me!

* I have to credit NOVAX5 for the idea. Although he had his muffler guy custom make his Y tips, I just happened to find my Y tips from Pep Boys. To my surprise, they were even a perfect snug fit in diamater within the 4.6 tips. They just needed to be cut and welded into place with the 4.6 tips.

How much did the whole conversion cost you?
