Help! Service Engine Soon Light!

It came on my 2001 3.0 X5, the idle had been a little on the high side (about 850rpm), then today the light comes on.
OBD II scanner tells me it is a code 41 meaning Intake Camshaft Sensor.

Is this some general problem, or can it be pinpointed to a particular part? Any help is always appreciated, thanks.

Most SES issues are not major, but you need to determine the fault code to know for sure. You can pull them yourself if you have an OBD-II scanner, you can have the dealer do it, or you can have it done by an independent mechanic.

The most common cause of the SES is a loose gas cap.

intake cam sensor is a bit of a pain to change but not that big of a deal. a 7 or 8 mm hex and about an hour should do it.

Just picked my 2001, 4.4 X5 up from dealer service today. Took it in because the SES light came on. Here is what they replaced, MAF Sensor (13-62-1-433-567) / Speed Sensor (12-14-7-539-166)/ O-Ring (12-14-1-748-398)/ Two Hoses (#11-15-7-556-838 & 11-15-7-556-837). Seems to run good now, and Service Engine Light is gone....

Specific part. A few months ago, the light came on ours too. Ours was exhaust cam position sensor. I think parts and labor was $350. WarrantyDirect covered it. Ran smoother afetr it was changed.

SES light came on and I had code 1159 and 1161

I have a 00 4.4 with 58K miles and took it to a local BMW repair shop they charged me $80.00 for 2 hoses and $160 for 2 hours to replace the hoses that go to the PVC type unit on the engine block.. I sure wished I pulled the cover off the engine to see for myself before I took to the repair shop...  .. I told them just to leave it and I would do the work myself but they where going to charge me an $85 testing fee!!! :wow: So I bit the bullet and paid the big bucks.. The hoses where falling apart from the oil and heat.. I've never seen a 4 year old hose fall apart in my hands before... I love my X5

engine light now off

Last night I turned the gas cap till it no longer clicked. This morning the service engine light is now off. Go figure. I do think it was the gas cap, but some sensor. Is running fine now. Time will tell.

When I picked up my '01, the previous owner mentioned to make sure the wire to the fuel cap is not caught under or pinched when resealing the fuel tank. It results in error messages. What kind, I don't know as I am real careful in screwing it back on.

light back on

Oh well, the light came back on and the idle is high like the poster said. Back to the dealer.
