ok found a great x5 4.8is but it doesnt have nav....

is the nav from BMW retrofitable on an 04 ? The deal is to good to pass up so i will take the truck either way but really wanted the factory nav system :dunno:

LeMansX5 08-09-2005 08:08 PM

Retrofiting the NAV is do-able but very difficult. King has done it. You have to completely rip the interior. It also costs around $4000.

UCrewX5 08-09-2005 08:09 PM

Doable? yes.
Easy? no.

See http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=58 for an idea of what's involved.

DJJ 08-10-2005 09:16 AM

Ohhh geez -thats not what I was hoping for - In my porsche 996 Turbo the nav was a simple plug and play and a gps antena - may have to think twice now about the truck darn :(

dan_fitz 08-10-2005 10:10 AM

Thought you were going to get regardless? It is a great truck! If you are getting good deal on it, you may want to think about going after market on the nav and enjoy the top-of-the-line X5 at a great price. Think twice before passing up.

Think about it!!! Any aftermarket system can provide you with what you need. Pioneer has an amazing double-din system with nav and all kinds of other goodies it'll fit like stock but you got dvd, mp3...... and so on.

DJJ 08-11-2005 08:23 PM

but can you make that awesome pioneer unit work with the volume control on the steering wheel ?

Paulpt 08-11-2005 09:01 PM

Dude, sorry and I don't meant to be disrespectful so don't take this the wrong way, but would you let go a good car for not having nav rather than getting an OK car for having nav? with all the aftermarket nav systems out there, even portable $500 ones that are the size of a palm pilot personally I would not let a good car at a good price go. You also have those papers with lines all over called maps, cheap and easy to use. Just my $0.02

dsheli 08-11-2005 09:42 PM

Dude no kidding. Nav is not that great. Sure it looks cool but you really don't need it. Chances are if you did you would not know how to use it. BMW nav systems are very complicated to work with. Buy the car.

pseto 08-11-2005 11:01 PM

I would buy an aftermarket portable NAV, like the Garmin StreetPilot. I can use it in any car and its better than OEM, IMO (touchscreen, many more points-of-interests, etc).

Personally, I wouldn't spend money for any OEM NAV until they are fully integrated with real time traffic reports. I think Acura has this and a few big cities provide the traffic updates.

SILENTx5 08-11-2005 11:15 PM

If the deal is too good to pass up, take it. Just get an aftermarket NAV loaded with all the goodies on it. I wish BMW NAV was touch screen. That would be awesome.

pepatrick 08-11-2005 11:50 PM

I like touch screen nav units, however I dont like the smudges they get. I have actually gotten used to the "dial" in for the destination points and I like the idea that my screen is not smudged. I also notice that the BMW navigation 2005-2 DVD is more accurate than our Honda Odyssey. Nav is cool...no doubt about it.

If the car is that good of a deal, you can always buy the nav retro kit. I am sure it is pain to install, but it can be done. I am trying to talk a buddy of mine into retrofitting his 2005 with a nav unit. He will eventually do it... :)

Agree with Pseto, if they where providing that info that would be great, but my experience with nav systems integrated in cars (mostly on bmw loaners) where a pain in the neck. Besides you never get your money back when you re-sell your car and a portable one can be taken to another car, boat, etc. And new ones come every so often it is not worth (at least to me) paying an extra 1,500 or more for something that will be obsolete in 6 months.

DJJ 08-14-2005 09:42 PM

I am either buying that one or a 2005 with 3k miles I found in NYC this week - thnx guys for all the imput :) i need nav so either way I will get sometihng like the garmin or a aftermarket unit like the pioneer

What's the model # of that Pioneer system? I'd like to look into that for my X.

Understand that youll loose youre OBC functions if you take out your head unit.

pseto 08-15-2005 09:22 AM

The Pioneer model that I saw that was cool was one of the AVIC models. My brother put it into his Lexus and its very cool. However, you will lose steering wheel functions and the LCD screen will pop up right in front of the vents. Not sure if you want a non-OEM look, plus if its really hot, you can't direct the air at you.

Late again on my reply but thats the one buddy

JJF 08-27-2005 10:40 PM

GET IT if it's a good deal. It drives really well. You will like it A LOT! I have the OEM nav which is cool because of the display for music/phone/nav, but I really don't use the nav that much because I only go where I know. It does look good, though.
