Check Brake Linings - Just Pads & Sensors?

The 'Check Brake Linings' light came on a couple of days ago in my 2002 X5. From what I've read, it's the pads & sensors that need to be replaced. The BMW dealer (Ferman BMW, Palm Harbor, FL) said that they might have to replace the rotors as well, and that it's common in X5's to have to do so. He quoted me for the front @ up to $650, and said that he'd call me if the back needed replacing too.

My X5 has about 42k miles on it - is what the dealership telling me true? He said if it's just the pads & linings, it's $200 - that's a better price :) .
Thanks- Stan

Edit: I didn't notice you had an '02:

Yeah, they almost always do rotors, too...though, w/only 42K miles you should be covered, under "Maintenance".

Folklore from many years talking about this with dealers says that the rotors are almost always replaced- because the BMW specs do not allow for very much "turning" and therefore not much room to take metal off. Apparently the rotors are thin to begin with so they cool faster...

now- for the part that will start a range war....

I had a 735i once, needed brakes, and I ended up at Midas, where they installed 4 rotors, pads, sensors etc, labor and LIFETIME Replacement guarantee, seems like 3 or 400 bucks... Car stopped fine, less squeaking, and far less dust.... FYI

yes, i agree with dealer. rotors are normally replaced when pads and sensors are worn.

personally, I would change over to the Axxis dustless brake pads. dealer won't put them on though. since you gotta spend the money, get something that way more useful (unless you like cleaning brake dust).

I'm sorry to highjack this thread, but I've had my X5 3.0 for a little over a month and can't take the dust. My X has 12,120 mi on it. When I change the brake pads to Axxis deluxe, do I need to purchase new sensors from the stealer? Thank's for any help....

Thanks for the info everyone - The dealer just called me back: front & back pads & rotors - just about $1,200.

To quote Planet of the Apes - "...those darn dirty Apes... Damn them, damn them all to hell...".

Oh well, I still love my X5! Cheers! :-)

Stan, ah now I get it: the '02s had the same 3/36 Maint as the '01s. The longer 4/50 for both started in MY '03 and >.

I bought the 1 yr Ext Maint a year ago and just got front pads and rotors done, under the wire, on their dime. It was a risk, but a slight win for me.

Sorry to read that. I'd try an Indie or even a brake joint for their 2Cts and Anyone has gotta be cheaper than a Stlr working off maint/warr, imo.

Brakes and rotors are easy and no rocket science here! If you do not want to DIY look for a good non-dealer and it will be half the price.
