i get about 13.9 in my 03 3.0i in Boston...mostly all city driving

EKS PYB 04-15-2008 01:44 PM

well, with LA and the suburbs in my '04 X5 3.0 with 54,278 miles 20" staggered my onboard computer unit says 17.2...but then again, I don't have a heavy foot. I do like to go fast if and when the freeway is clear but most of the time it is bumper to bumper...

CharlieHustleX5 04-18-2008 11:17 AM

Well i'm getting an average of 17.5 mpg on my 3.0 x5 with 22" wheels...If your gas mileage is going down and you've already serviced the car, you might want to check if your brakes are dragging.

UncleBob 04-18-2008 11:42 AM

that is really bad. i get 18 MPG in city traffic at the worst, 21 highway best and usually an average of about 20 on my 3.0i

things that come to my mind would be a vacuum leak somewhere, a bad MAF, even spark plugs. i change my plugs long before the mfg recommendations and see an improvement in mileage.

and if it's any consolation, it costs me about $160 to fill my X5 at $1.85/liter and that's cheap for europe. many countries are well over $2/liter.

Dayum and me who thought 16 MPG on a 4.4 with 20's was bad city driving.

vinuneuro 04-18-2008 01:01 PM

Let's not forget how much the way one drives affects fuel consumption, esp in the city.

hoppy_70 04-18-2008 02:55 PM

You guys should stop complaining! Here in the UK petrol has just topped the £5 per gallon mark ($10)! My 4.4 does around 21mpg driving it mostly on the motorway which, looking at some of your figures, is pretty good.... The cost of fuel here has prompted me to book it in for an LPG conversion next week which is less than half the price of petrol.

but don't forget that you don't get the same mileage from LPG as from gasoline. factor that in when you do (if you do) a cost/benefit analysis i.e. if the conversion costs 2,000 and you'll save 0.05 per mile, you'll have to drive 40,000 miles just to recoup your cost.

hoppy_70 04-19-2008 05:06 AM

I'm told that the difference between petrol and LPG is negligible in both power and MPG. The cost in the UK is around 45% of that of petrol so the savings will be much more than your estimate. Also because of the high cost of petrol, the cars resale value will increase by more than it's cost (or at least the same) meaning that recouping my cost is a no brainer........
