Interesting. Did they try a transmission reprogram per the SIB? If so what version of Progman did they use?

I refuse to believe there is no remedy for this...even with Dinan software, it still persists. Perhaps if enough of us sign some sort of petition, BMW will issue some sort of resolve. Not holding my breath though...by the time they're motivated to do anything i may have pulled the trigger.

I didn't know there was Dinan transmission software that could potentially fix it?! The guy who created the lurch website still hasn't had a resolution and he's been chasing the problem a lot longer then we have. So you're right, we're probably SOL.

Hi there, Can the lurch harm the transmission?and as one guy said he had the transmissio replaced and it still did the same albeit less often!!!!!

JWalker 04-14-2009 11:31 AM

Just to chime in... I had the same issue come up late last year -- the violent 2 -1 shift from a rolling stop, or even when the car was stopped. It felt like I was hit from behind by a bus. The dealer reflashed the transmission software saying it's a common issue.

Now (4-5 months later), it seems to be back. Not nearly as bad, or it may be that I'm now more careful and watch my takeoffs more closely...

Does the hold the gas pedal down for 30 seconds method work?

omodos 04-14-2009 01:56 PM

thanks for the reply Never tried the hold pedal down for 30secs, what I really want to know is if the feature of the x5 trans. will actuially destroy the gearbox....hmmmm and all this adaptive driving jargon doe sit hold true>?

should i reset my tranny even though i dont have any problems (knock on wood), i just purchased it from another owner and i figure it may shift differently if i reset it.

A reset won't harm the trany...my understanding is that it will re-adjust to your style of driving.

My dealer told me it's pointless because it will adapt to your style within a week or two depending on how much you drive. I think it only makes sense if you're having issues.

-Turn key to position 2. But dont start the engine.
-Floor the gas pedal for 30-40 secs.
-Release the gas pedal, step on brake and start the engine.
-Drive FORWARD (Not reverse, so make sure you are out of your garage before you attempt to do the transmission reset)

Do this every other month or when the transmission start slamming again.

Thanks for the advice. This 30 sec reset does the trick. In my case it had immediate effect in the first couple of days. Then the hiccup (2nd to 1st gear) showing up again with less rough pattern. Wondering if this is BMW product issue, or the trany getting too old (100K miles). Seems a lot of people having this problem.
