Sorry, I did not have a camera handy. I have got as far as "lifting" the whole mirror unit off after unscrewing the three torx screws - thus exposing the motor unit. This was not necessary. The microswitch can be gently lever off from its "enclosure" and check whether it is faulty or not. If the mirrors can be electrically folded in and out, I can't see how the shop could not just replace the microswitch! All the rest of the mirror mechanical parts appear to be solidly build except for the microswitch - the metal piece hinge is, at best, dodgy. And replacing the microswitch should only take a couple of minutes once you managed to get the mirror cover off.

Great notes. Do you know the p/n of the microswitch?

Sorry, no again. If I do open the other mirror for cleaning, I will remember to write down the part number and take some pictures. http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...irror-led.html (3rd image) show a good photo of the mirror motor casing (note the three torx screws) and next to it the plastic piece is where the microswitch is encased - you can lever it and it will slide out showing the microswitch.

Ok finally I got the enough courage with the suitable tools and opened the mirror cover -be careful this is dangerous and I was about to break it even it’s so easy to be broken- ……. Found lots of greasy dust but nothing loose!! There are 2 metal pins I took them out then in but still the problem is there….
Stop!!!!!!!
Don’t tell me I have to change the mirrors there must be a solution for that

if you want folding mirrors you have to buy the 2 new mirrors - then the door switch. i retrofitted this on my 01. wasn't that hard. I admit the mirrors were a challenge to get out. It's funny, i was more adventurous with my 01.. i'm taking this baby into the dealer and see if it's covered under my new extended warranty... which they said it would be.

u must be kidding me!!! i have to pay thousands to get folding options to work again!!!

Thatwas the for the person asking how do i get folding mirrors. So i was telling him what he'd need to do to retrofit.

You can do whatever you want to do or spend whatever you want to spend. I would suggest just finding a good independent, or going to dealer and tell them what to do. Tell them you dont want to pay for replacing the mirrors. Aren't you under warranty anyway though?
