Cam Position Sensor SES Wont Go Away

I have the Peake R5/FCX-3 code reader & used to to diagnose the SES warning. Code came up as OF 72 (Camshaft position sensor, Cyl#5-8). So I bought the FEBI-Bilstein replacement - both of them - and replaced 2 old CPS with 2 new CPS. Now my SES light is back on & when I use the code reader it comes up as OF 71 72, meaning both Camshapft position sensors, Cyl#1-4 AND Cyl#5-8. When I reset the MIL it only goes away for a few miles, then comes back with same codes. I pulled the battery cable & let sit overnight to reset the computer, but the problem wont go away. It also seems a little sluggish off the line, but could be my imagination.

What did I do wrong? How do I get more information?

Thanks,
Hawkeyes

PS - Im absolutely certain the new CPS are the correct ones, it is the part number that supercedes old style smaller diameter core.

The sluggishness off the line would be from different cam timing due to the DME's lack of seeing cam position. But as to why they aren't reading you might have to go into further diagnosis. You can always use the WDS link to pull up the wiring schematic and ohm check the wires from the sensors to the DME, and if you have access to a good scope meter check the signal, it would be basic analog squarewave.

But thats why I love the diagnostic equipment at the dealer, it gives you all the parameters the fault was set under and a better fault description. And has "test plans" attached to each fault to help determine the cause. But as long as you have a knowledge of the system and how it works, you can figure out what the causes and affects are to each problem. Alot of people treat the symptoms rather than the causes!

You went cheap and bought Febi-Bilstein camshaft position sensors, which are highly known to be crap. Even when new, those Febi sensors are nothing but sh*t.

Contact Desert Motor Works ([email protected]), get yourself some OEM sensors, and be good-to-go.

Agreed, you only want to use factory OEM cam postion sensors.

Yeah that’s me alright, just a cheap f—ker. That’s why I always buy parts highly known to be crap & sh—t even when new.

The FEBI sensors were the only ones offered by AUTOHAUS AZ & I’ve always had good results with their parts for my Porsche, wife’s BMW and son’s VW.

Somehow I must have missed what everyone else knows – FEBI is crap. I’ll never buy another FEBI piece of s—t again! Nothing! If I wasn’t so stupid & cheap I’d have bought the right ones from the start.

BTW, the SES light went out. Never mind.

Nahh, the prison psychologist said anti-depressents make me violent. Something to do with not taking direction, problems with authority figures. Think I'll just go hunting.
