My 2004 4.8is has more rattles than any car I have ever owned. I've given up trying to fix them, as it gets to the stage it's just not worth the hassle going to the dealer all the time. I still like the car, but I've just come to the conclusion that BMW have trouble building cars that don't rattle.

It seems like a flimsy setup, and allows for some motion of the frame giving me a rattle/vibration with acceleration.

Hmmm... That must be how mine is too, then. I guess I'm just recalling the four screws to hold the plate onto the frame - I'll have to check that out!

*UPDATE* TahoeM3, you were indeed right about the frame mount - the plate has 4 screws, but the back is mounted to the car with just 2.
To make sure everything stays put, I used some thick velcro tape stuck to the back of the bottom of the frame mount, and to the car. (Works quite nicely, as it holds firmly, but I can still remove the plate if I ever need to... )

Maybe I'll achieve that level of Zen where it doesn't bother me anymore, but my 2000 328Ci never made a peep of rattle/vibration noise in the 6 years I owned it, so I am a bit disappointed if this is the best we can expect from the 50%-more-expensive X5...

Not bashing the American built X5's but most BMWs built overseas have better workmanship quality and all. They all feel much more solid and rattle-free than our X5's.

I have to agree mine makes all sorts of funny noises in back and i've just about given up on trying to find it. I had a 2002 330ci for three years and after driving on boston roads it never made any of the noises or rattles my 4.6 makes go figure

It's because instead of a trunk monkey, bmw x5 comes with a rattling troll in the back at no extra cost.

Very sad if that's true...

Have any of you guys tried to fold the back seat down? i guess i will try that next... but for mine seems like all the little noises come from the back compartment where the spare tire is.. but again maybe not..

As I like to say, it's the "Guenter" factor versus the "Bubba" factor. :D
