What do u mean when you said..."so I backed-out the torx screws in the bump stops to make a tighter seal" what bumps Stops??.. sorry can u give me more deatails? can u or someone have spare time to actually take pictures step by step and what areas u have to focus on to get rid of these noises? i know its problaly a pain to do it. anyone?? Thanks again guys.

check this out. i believe the torx screw is part #11. when u open ur hatch, along both sides of it u'll see a round, rubber stop. the stops are not on the liftgate/hatch, they are on the chasis itself. what, i believe, he did was loosen the torx screw. by doing this, it brought the stop further out; so that, when the hatch is closed, it creates a tighter fit. i, on the other hand, bought felt pads and stuck them on the stops themselves and have not had a problem since.

i hope janix doesn't mind me using this pic.
the bumb stops i circled in yellow. try the felt pads before anything else. after putting the felt on the stops, the sounds (what sounded like the license plate rattling) that i was hearing went away. http://www.filefarmer.com/broknlgs24/BMW/AMPrack.JPG |
UGH!!!! the noises drive me batty! there is one that i only hear at high speeds on a highway when i hit a bump. it's loud. i first thought it was the seatbelt. no, that's not it.
just today i think i may have found the culprit!! SUNROOF!!!! GRRR..... |
:iagree: I am new to X5 ownership and am finding the same issues.
(It sure is good to have this online community to bounce problems off though... ) Mines an '02 and has a slight rattle coming from the centre-of-roof console or from the sunroof - It sometimes goes away by putting pressure on the roof lining, but only sometimes. Are there schematic drawings available that show you how to remove the roof console/lining so that any potential issues can be addressed? I have taken it to BMW here in Sydney Australia who have the same "you should expect some rattles" attitude, so it looks like its up to me to fix it. I'm assuming you guys are mostly in the USA - well, the BMW dealerships here have the same 'duck and run' tactics. Cheers, Mark |

Anyone have a windshield rattle that occurs over a bump. I get annoyed but I may just accept it as well.
