Angel Eyes on 2001 X5 with Daytime Running Lights
Hi guys, I recently upgraded my headlights to aftermarket with angel eyes and realized that there's a plug for the angel eyes that my X5 does not have since it has daytime running lights, so how do I make the angel eyes light up and can I disable the daytime running lights? Thanks to all.

Here are the pics. You can see the plug there next to the high beam plug on the headlight, I don't have that, next you see the daytime lights that are on regardless of the lights being fully off, on the next picture is the first turn for the small light where the corner light turns on and the daylight still on;finally the last turn for the xenon, there the corner light stays on and the daytime light turns off so that you can use the high beam freely. Any ideas?

I don't know the answer you're looking for but ...
Didn't the headlights come with instructions? I would have thought they would have pre-wired it to work for plug-n-play but maybe it's because yours did not come originally with the angel eyes. Maybe do a search and see if others had the same problem. Maybe if you tell us what brand or where you got them it might help others who may have the same headlights. That's as far as having the angel eyes on in headlights. As far as turning the daytime running lights off, I know on the facelifted models you go to the dealer to turn them off. I think mtX5 has the same headlights. You might want to PM him. Good Luck! |
You need to run wire to power those AE's. They are for a non-US spec vehicle which has an additional small light unit in the low beam for parking lights.
The daylight running lights are actually the headlight bulbs powered by a 4.8V AC from the LKM. |
Where did you get those lights from?
My setup from Dave @ custom angel eyes looks very, very similar. Basically you have to do all this wiring before the angel eyes can power up, because you tap into a power source in the ECU. I had to have someone do it for me. Its somewhat difficult and time consuming. If you ignore that wiring, you basically are not supplying any power to the angel eyes, therefore explaining your issue. The power source has nothing to do with the light switches (DRL, parking lights, Xenons) |
Thanks TwinsPoppa for replying, thanks Zulu95 for the explanation and thanks mtx5 for the idea. I got these from eBay. Now can any of you tell me where exactly do I need to draw the power from to make them work?

There is mention of a "power feed from the ECU". Details from mtX5 of wiring color and location should assist you or use a DVM and locate a 12V switched source under the hood.
|
First, check to see if they sent you the wiring I am talking about it. If they did, I can give you instructions from there..

Hi mtx5, they did not send me any aditional wiring but please give me the instructions anyways, I'll get the wiring needed and get it done since I'm pretty handy, thanks.
