I have the Toyo Proxes ST II and they have been very quiet, ride well and grip well. I had them siped when installed here by Les Schwab. They worked well in our last snow storm, but I wouldn't say they come close to a dedicated snow tire.

Any idea what I might be able to get for th 800 - 1000 range.

I'd say there's a very good chance you can get the 255/55/18 Proxes ST II's that I got for under $800 out the door. I got my set down here at Les Schwab for $741 out the door, including the siping. I'm about 3K miles in and they are very good thus far with almost no visible wear. Very quiet as well.

I am running Goodyear Fortera Triple tread. $1100 installed at sears. All I can say is best all season tire I have ever run and I live in Seattle like you with all the snow and I ice we still have...absolutely amazing tires. Quiet, great handling in snow ice and standing water. Here is the the survey from tirerack.
Good luck

If you buy from tirerack where would u get them installed?

How much does Sears charge on top of their tire prices for installation? Sears is pretty cheap

I bought a set of Michelin Lattitudes recently. Excellent traction in the rain, quiet.

I ordered the GY's from Sears and had them shipped to the Overlake store. Think I paid $217 each and the balance was mount/balance plus the tire warranties....I think tirerack has a place on the website that recommends places to have the tires mounted based on your zip. Go here.

craigslist! get a second set of rims for the winter, you will be amazed at what winter tires do in the cold, snow or no snow...
