The 2nd gen MDX ('07+) can, but price is still up there. When it comes down in price, I'll take a look to. The X5 is more performance and exclusivity (but granted you expect to pay for that.)

Would you consider yourself an owner or enthusiast? Is a vehicle transportation or something that can be enjoyable to drive and you look forward to driving vs. riding in it?

The reason I ask is your experiences are very different from mine - you say the X5 is just another SUV and I can argue it is very different from others with lots of specific examples. The point is there are multiple perspectives on the subject but I’d bet that the majority of people on this forum are enthusiasts and don't consider the X5 to be just another SUV.

I bought my 05 X5 to do some towing too... Too bad BMW is not making any trailer hitch for it. Got to love that. I don't want to hear that this was a supplier issue either....BMW has to take ownership of this. If they can build cars...they could weld up a trailer hitch.

get the curt hitch. I think it is more than adequate....*if* they ever offer an OEM one you can replace the curt if you're not satisfied. (It's only $160)

Just like any other old car, things break but X5 breaks much more and cost much more to get it fixed. I hope you dont sound like you do now, when stuff crap out on you. He needs to vent and point out that with the money he purchased the X with he could he got himself in less trouble vehicle. And again, X5 is just another SUV, no more no less.

As X5rolls said, for us the X5 is not another SUV, it's the X5 with its own character, and that is why we are on an Enthusiast forum.

you must have misunderstood me though, i agree with you that X5 is of the same caliber of cayenne, ML, Lexus, RRS, etc... what i actually said is that those calibers, do not compare with the group of pathfinder, honda, sorento, fortuner, etc... and I also said that if you care about less running cost, go ahead and buy any of the SECOND group... hope it's clear by now.

illustrative example: can you compare a peugot 307 to a bmw 330? the 307 has waaaay cheaper maintenance, but would it be the same to ride it as riding a 330? please, do not tell me yes :) that's why i said that you can pay 100$ for a bike if transportaion is all what you need, and you can climb up the ladder with more expensive but pleasurable vehicles until you hit a ferrari... i think replacing the pads on an F50 costs you thousands of dollar... but hey, it's an F50! it's all about preferences and choices... let us all enjoy our rides...

Oh, and yes... the pilot does look like a shoe box...

NOVAX5 02-06-2009 03:39 AM

first of all, i can't compare a peugot to a bmw, cause darn i have never seen one. second, what makes you think you climb up ladder purchasing 2001 x5? you even step down from the ladder i would say. farrari is exotic car and doesn't apply here. i can count up to 20 prefacelift x5s in and around my work area and i see them everyday. the thing is so cheap right now. and yes, you can compare MDX to X5, i dont see why not.
