My friend (partner in Parting out land rovers) just bought one (OBDII) off of ebay and works great on his '96 RR. It will work on any car w/ the OBDII plug in. He had a code (check light) and drove around while it was doing a check on the system (live data).

One (of many) great things about the Range Rover Classic 1990-1995 has an OBD that comes plugged (under the passenger side seat) in at all times, just reads codes...

I can not remember which Ebay store he got it from and i think the price was around $100-175 or so but well worth it and i will get one soon from the same place. I will get the name of the store and post it here...

My Harbor Freight $120 special/Actron $89 one won't do live data nor monitor the different sensors on a BMW/MB, so what are the chances of a less than $30 model performing the required functions?

Well, here really the $30 is for the connector only... the s/w and your laptop are the ones doing all of the work, really. It seems from some of this guy's feedback, that the s/w he is sending with this is an illegal copy... which I am sure would cost a lot more if one were to buy.

Any OBDII reader will allow you to read and erase codes. I bought an Autoxray Scout, brand new for $59 + shipping on ebay. Works with all of my cars, the 4Runner, Yukon, and X5.

Nothing fancy, simply plug it into your OBDII plug, click "read" and it'll read out any stored codes. If there are any, it'll let you erase them as well. Sounds like that's all you need to do if you have a light on after you replaced your cam sensor.

So is the general consensus that this thing may just do the job, but depending on software.

I suppose like icer006 said - for circa $30 its not too much to waist if it dosn't work, and by going by the guy's feedback it would seem that it does.

My other thought was the 'Rev' software for the iphone (its available on apps now) for around £30 again. But on top of that you need to purchase a wifi OBD connector that then sends the data to iphone wirelessly. You could also purchase the wifi link on its own and then get hold of some suitable software and have it send the data to and from your wifi equiped laptop/desktop. The downside? Well the wifi gizmo is circa $200+

I'm still tempted to give the ebay item a whirl a mind. Its not like I'll be doing any re-programming, just getting the error codes so i can then fix the fault(s), etc and then subsequently use it to reset the light(s) saving me the slightly excessive charge for the stealership doing it!
