Vibration While Accelerating

Hey guys,

I'm starting to notice a slight vibration while accelerating (when the car is moving). You can definitely feel it on the steering wheel, pedals and see the side view mirror shake. Now, when I have the X in neutral (while the vehicle is in motion...highway speeds)and rev the X, you do not feel it. Only while the vehicle is in motion and in gear. I checked underneath, and everything seems ok (guibo, bushings, etc). I did find a torn right outer CV boot, and have bought a new half shaft, but I do not think that is the problem. That, and I do not suspect the tires to be out of balance, since the vibration only occurs while accelerating.

Within the past six months, I've replaced the transfer case (thanks BMW :D ) drivers side hald shaft, lower ball joints, sway bar end links and the wishbones. Again, all the other bushings seem ok.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, the X has a manual gearbox.

Could it be the drive shaft or an axle issue? :dunno:

I checked the guibo, and didn't see any cracks. I really didn't inspect the front axle either. What would I look out for? Now, I am going to replace the pass half shaft this weekend, since the boot is torn, but I do not hear any clicking or any noises when I turn the steering wheel.

I am not sure to be honest with you. the flex-disk/guibo would probably be easy to tell, but I think you could have a u-joint problem or an axle issue. I don't really know what to tell you to look for. I was just thinking that is has to be a rotating part and it you are confident that it is not the wheels, there is only so much else that it can be. I would hope that it isn't an issue with the diff or transfer case.

Have any wheel weights fallen off? Are your lugs tight? Are you positive it is not a wheel or tire issue?

I had an issue on my 325i once where the cat. converter moved slightly over and began rubbing on the driveshaft. That created a vibration, but I am not sure if that could happen on the X.

REplaced the pass side half shaft on Sat (torn outer boot) and had the tires rebalanced. Unfortunately, the vibration is still there. Any other ideas? I did notice the half shafts (both of them...replaced drivers side last Nov) fit easily into the wheel hub (no necessary hammering / pressing into hub). I bought both shafts from autohausaz.com. I believe the manufacturer is Empi???

Any other ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I may have found my problem. I inspected the front and rear flex disc (aka guibo), and didn't find any cracks. I then inspected the transfer case rubber mount (item #3 in the diagram below) and it appears pretty chewed up. My guess is, when BMW replaced the transfer case several months ago, they reused the old mount instead of installing a new one.

My question is, would a worn transfer case mount cause the vibration described in the posts above?
