Do those extensions bolt to the frame, or just slide up against it?

To the frame.

Got tons of pics of hitch install & deinstall. Working on detail article.

This is the inside the trunk view of the bolts which go into the pic of piece weasel posted. Bolts go from bottom, top and back.

This is under the car above the exhaust shields. The 2 bolts go on to the same piece.

So, do the bolts shown in the last picture, bolt into/thru the leg of the support?

I spoke to BMW today and they said hitch is in production with a new manufacturer then testing etc. They could not give specific date but said it would be between 30 and 60 days .

I wonder if the pricing will be different with the new manufacturer, and knowing there is demand and back order. I would bet the new vendor factory piece is built exactly the same, unless the engineers decided to make improvements for some reason. Will be curious to see.....

Yes, the bolts in last picture bolt into bottom holes of this piece shown in gray color

I'd actually reccomend against it... it is a weak design that usually damages the body.
