thinking about selling x

Since I can't find a hitch for my X5 and I was going to use it to tow my other car along with my possessions for moving to San Francisco in June I am playing with the idea of selling the car. What can I get for it? Thinking about putting a feeler out on craigslist locally for it.

I'll buy that bra off you... would you sell it separately? How much? PM me.

we350z 03-09-2009 04:58 PM

I am just doing all or nothing I think for now :-)

RPX5 03-09-2009 05:00 PM

Okay let me know! Goodluck!

Well, you're probably not gonna get what you'd like with the economy as it is. If you want to get an idea, go search on what other comparable vehicles are going for. Check autotrader.com and cars.com. Ebay can be deceiving but use the completed listings search function.

Hopefully, you won't have to give up your nice X.

Well here's my main competition I guess. The closest comp I could find, almost exact same mileage but a year newer. Obviously not as upgraded as mine:

2001 BMW X5 4.4i AWD

You'll get more for it in San Francisco

Market is rough for any vehicle right now. The biggest thing you will have to overcome is the fact it's now a 9 year old vehicle. Unless you find a cash buyer, it's going to be extremely hard for someone to get financed at a decent rate if it all. My advice - keep it. It looks great and will be hard to replace with something as nice without spending a ton of money. I thought long and hard about getting rid of mine, but I decided to do a bunch of maintenance to it instead and keep it for the long haul!

I just wanted to make you feel a little better about the Tow hitch. This problem is also affecting other manufacturers. A friend drives and Infiniti and they have no tow hitches either. Have you considered paying for a move with a pod based company or something like that? I moved my stuff across country that way and it was not very expensive. A friend moved from DC to Colorado for about $800 using Pods in late december.

Good luck!

RPX5 03-10-2009 10:20 AM

I agree with Vegas, I thought of selling/trading mine as well, and as I test drove other cars, such as new Jeep Grand Cherokees and Hummer H3's, at the price i was looking to pay, nothing compared in handling, pickup, power and overall pride of the vehicle. One of the reasons I was looking to switch out of my X5 was because I didnt have a trailer hitch either, and I wanted to tow a small boat. It actually isn't too expensive to add a hitch, you should look into it.

mthexuma 03-10-2009 01:22 PM

You won't get much selling it. Probably <$10k. The comparison you found is from a dealer so that price is jacked up.

we350z 03-11-2009 07:36 PM

Yeah I have looked at alternatives but one thing I want to do is tow my other car behind me and put my stuff in both cars. I don't have a ton of stuff but enought to fill both cars. So I think a pod might be overkill $800 seems a little steep anyway. I see I have a few choices:

1) Keep X5, drive 2 cars seperately (but that will take longer and putting miles on 2 cars)
2) Keep X5 and find hitch, tow other car (ideal)
3) Sell X5, rent Uhaul, tow other car.

I don't want to sell the car for beans when I don't have to. This really pisses me off.

black on black with relatively low miles for the year, 87's, clean history.

some will say I'm crazy but I think you can pull 13 on a good day.

Why not sell other car and keep the X5 and rent the Uhaul tow the x5:D or you dont wanna give up the Z you have

Weasel 03-11-2009 10:58 PM

I wouldn't want to give up the Z either... You'd likely be fine with an aftermarket hitch for the tow as long as you keep the tongue weight to a minimum. Load the car on the trailer backwards if need be. (I've done this many times in the past :D)

:iagree:

Install the aftermarket hotch and pay attention when you balance the load. Or just use a tow dolly (2 wheels). Another option - I flat tow my porsche, if you can find a tow bar specifically made for your Z. Negligable tongue weight.

we350z 03-17-2009 02:31 AM

Hmm i guess doing the curt hitch just for the trip is an option. Probably the only time i will tow anything but I don't want to chance trashing either car especially the Z.

The Z ain't super light (3300 lbs) and I was going to put some stuff in the cargo area and seats. What is a "tow dolly" and can you tow the vehicle backwards with that to further decrease tongue weight?

I wonder if the Z is too low to tow backwards without risking bottoming out the front fascia.

I'm guessing this may be possible if you lock the steering wheel with the wheels straight? I think i have seen tow trucks do this.

Does uhaul rent flat trailers or only the 2 wheel tow dollys? What is a tow bar and why does it have negligable tongue weight?

thx guys

Yes uhaul does rent the regular car trailers, I've used theirs before. The tow bar is what people use when you see a car being drug around behind a RV... Personally I'd stick with the full trailer and just be extra aware of the amount of tongue weight. As long as you can physically lift the front of the trailer it should be ok... But with an overall trailer weight like that I'd find a trailer with brakes as the load will be at the upper level recommended with the curt hitch, and BMW recommends trailer brakes with anything over 3300 lbs. A simple surge brake system on the trailer tongue would be sufficient.

Here's a pic of the tow bar, which would have effectively no tongue weight, but if it is an automatic you would need to remove the driveshaft to avoid damaging the transmission by turning all it's internals without the engine running... but that shouldn't be a problem since I'm pretty sure the Z has a stick.
