2005 x5 4.4 green liquid leak
I am going nowhere with this problem. I took it to the dealer after i first noticed it on the garage floor. they replaced the valve cover gasket. brought it home...leak continued. took it to dealer again, this is time they said, it was the transmission pan gasket issue which they replaced. I put a cardboard under it . this morning i noticed a green liquid on the cardboard. The leak seemed more than usual. I guess this is coolant.
Is this a coolant leak? How can they miss this one? Do you guys think they have been just ignoring the real issue and fleecing BMWNA since my x5 is still under warranty. |
only green fluid I know is antifreeze. sometime it can be other colors, but I don't know of any other fluid that could be green, although Rain X does make a green washer fluid.
|
Green should be the coolant, since AT Fluid is fuchsia, power steering I guess the same fuchsia...washer fluid,is your washer fluid green,my X is loosing some from the joint of pump and a headlight washer hose due a bad clip and hose hardening, but it doesn't leak until I press a super wash button.
I don't know if there's a reason to swap a Valve Cover Gasket,I just don't know I am new to V8 engine myself, but it sounds odd for me,I never heard about coolant going into Over Head Compartment. Anyway...you can check the source yourself, using the same cardboard,if it's transmission pan so it will be in that area. is the puddle always in the same spot? |
the puddle is towards the front passenger side. that is where i have noticed it mostly.
it has been serviced at the dealership only ( to the best of my knowledge) since it is still under warranty ( 48K) miles |
tricky spot...I know that there's a a hose that gets condensation off the A/C evaporator, also it's a spot for coolant to escape out if your Xs' heater core were toasted/cracked.
You didn't answer if your windshield washer fluid was the same green color or not. |
Sorry forgot to mention the washer is blue...
Also, today I noticed a squeaky noise coming from the steering wheel everytime I made a turn. Is that normal? Quote:

Power steering fluid is red oil, not green. it's just a coincidence.
About the green liquid, it's coolant (since your washing fluid is blue, there is nothing else that can be green in your car... well actually, in some countries the diesel is green... but i guess you would have known if it's diesel leaking from the smell... or you might have gone in flames by now :D) So a coolant leak is really tricky to trace, you need a smart tech to point it out... ask for a pressure test, the leak should show up somewhere... |
I didnt notice any leak today....dont know if that is a good sign though.

problem will not go away by itself. it sounds like anti-freeze. you should at least check your coolant level. it won't take you more than 1 minute. if it's lower than min level, top it off and keep your eyes on the level(also leak) for the next couple days.

Check your power steering fluid level, I'm wondering if you have CHF 11S instead of atf for some reason. I would go back there and tell your SA that you have been in mos any times for the SAME LEAK and a more experienced tech needs to look at it and find the leak in question. And tell them as many details about the leak as you can, maybe point at the wet spot on the under panels to show him where the leak is. The coolant expansion tank and radiator drain plug is in that area for the V8 X5s and that should have been the first place they looked.
