Shifting from 1st - 2nd hardcore jerk

I have a 2001 automatic x5 with 113 k miles. Everytime I drive, the shift from 1st to 2nd brings forth a jerk that feels like getting hit from the rear. Sometimes the jerk is more severe than other times. It doesnt matter how fast I am going, the jerk is present. A while ago I had a tranny flush and that just masked the jerk for a while. Any ideas?

Have you tried the tranny reset?

1) Turn key to pos 2 (don't start the engine)
2) Press down on the accelerator all the way to the floor and hold 20-30seconds
3) Let accelerator up, start the X and test drive.

By the way twins... you are fully equipped to test whether that method actually works! You could rear the trans adaptations, reset using that method, then read adaptations again to see if they all zeroed out!

I didn't read the adaptations but I did notice recently when I shift to reverse it didn't go in gear immediately like it did before (there woud be a half-second delay where if I did not step on the brake the X would roll forward). So, I did the tranny reset and no problem with it shifting into reverse immediately now and it seems to have smoothed out some shift points. I didn't have any jerking/banging/roughness before but it SEEMS to be even smoother now. Don't really know just going by my seat-of-the-pants meter.

I've tried the Tranny Reset thing and no luck. It still jerks. It does it at around 2k rpm..

May be a software issue then psharma... I'd call the dealer and ask if there are any service bulletins reguarding that on your model (as I don't remember off hand) because if there are they might do the programming under goodwill. (not likely though)

Otherwise, I'd check the forgotten things like the guibo joint as it being worn can cause rough shift feel as well.

And Jose, why did you do that procedure when you can reset any and all adaptations through service functions in the GT1?

What would I do with the guibo joint? Lube or replace or what?

Also. Could this be a sign of a failiing transmission? Just want to know if I can look forward to giving my life savings to a mechanic.

Weasel, does that procedure really work for older X5's (N62 engines)?

Weasel 04-14-2009 06:58 PM

I don't really know as I never used that procedure... If I think of it next time my X is in the shop I will test and confirm/debunk that method with the GT1.

Oh yeah, the guibo joint would need to be replaced if it does indeed have have slack.
