Preventing My Dog From Unlocking an X5
 

So X5 (E53) owners are undoubtedly aware that the master lock/unlock button is on the center console between the cup holders and the gear selector. The button that activates the hazard lights is adjacent.

MY problem is that when we go somewhere and leave our little doggie inside the car, he inadvertently steps on these buttons. At BEST, this results in him turning on the hazard lights (which is bad ENOUGH, though, 'cause he COULD be in there long enough to run the battery down). At WORST, he turns on the hazard lights AND unlocks the doors . . . drawing attention to the car AND preventing would-be evil-doers from entering the car.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Our best solution so far is to lay the owner's manual over the buttons when we leave him in the car. This problem, of course, hopes that he doesn't accidentally kick the book OFF the buttons.

We would be open to ANY kinds of ideas that people have . . . especially people who might have addressed this problem themselves. I thank you and so does the dog, whose much-loved car rides are being curtailed until we have a solution to this issue!

i think all X5's had this feature... get the net that will keep him in the back. it attaches to the roof area. up front there are controls like the wiper arm/ blinker arm that i wouldnt want a dog near.

if you cant find the BMW net then i'm sure you can rig one up.

other than that, i think you can reach the connector from inside the center console by removing the tray that holds CDs. possibly disconnect it?:dunno:

That reminds me of a time i left my dog in my X5 with the key in the ignition. The second i step out and close the door, he happens to step on the button and locks me out of the car. I had to run from one side of the car to the other, hoping he would follow me and accidently hit the button again to let me it. Luckily, it worked. :D

i forgot to add that the sight of me running around my car and talking to my dog inside the car drew quite a crowd :confused:. ( i was at a lacrosse camp with professional lacrosse players, who joined in the effort :rofl:)

Well I have had my X5 for over 8 years and my dog for 9. So, what I usually do is bring a towel from home and lay it over the button area (fold it over many times to create a buffer/cushion)--it usually works as he won't step on the button directly. But honestly, I'm only going into someplace really quick so no one is going to take something out of the car and also that is the reason you have a dog --to fend off any criminals :taz:! Unless you have a Chihuahua or that size ha.

I have a dog net. This solves all these problems including your dog scratching the leather, leaving hair everywhere and also your dog will stress out much less if it's in a "caged like" area.

Is it kindofabigdeal for your X to have only one headlight on???????

Haha yeah actually neither of my headlights are on in that picture. Its just the flash from the camera. I haven't had time to take a better picture.

As long as he doesn't change your radio presets then I really don't see a problem. My last pooch kept changing mine, even when I stopped just to get gas. Really started to get on my nerves so I forced him to ride in the back. That worked until he started changing my tv station to animal planet from the rear center console. Oh well, still man's best friend.
