2005 4.4 x5 whistling and tapping noise
I have purchased this 2005 BMW X5 4.4i couple weeks ago it has 60K miles and runs great, but there is two things that are bothering me since day one. First is the whistling noise that seems to be coming from some hose I guess, see video on youtube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZauJzZ_vJQ whistling can be heard best from second 25 to 35. The second is a plasticky "tapping noise" that can be heard best when oil cap is removed. Second youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eo4Fw9QlR8 Like I said the car runs great and there is no "check engine" light active. Could anyone please tell me if there is anything that has to be done here? Thanks. |
i kinda have the same whistling noise...i think it is normal...also if you remove the oil dipstick you will hear similar noise as when you remove the filler cap and vacuum loss..i have asked around outside and in this forum...think it is normal...

The whistling noise ....Sound like you have intake leak, check your intake boot it may have crack or small leak.
Tapping noise ... Sound like cams seal issue. |

wouldn't this throw a code mmediately? I am driving it for a month already and there is no codes whatsoever. I've also recently "listened to" a friend's bmw 740 which has a similar tapping noise after removing oil cap, but no whistling... |
this is common, i have the whistle and i believe lifter tapps issue. do we know if these issues are covered under the CPO warranty? thanks

Took the car to a friend who happens to work at a bmw dealership he says the whistling is coming from alternator and it is normal. Tapping noise is also normal he said... I thought that if i buy a bmw the engine will run like a swiss clock.... All these sounds make me just uncomfortable. Car runs great other than that

And I agree, I would expect a BMW not to be making these noises. My brother has had 2 328's that have had a knocking noise from the lifters. The dealership just says your car is fine and this is a known problem. Well if its a problem.... Fix it. haha |
