I love my X5 4.6is but...

it's time for a 4.8!

Anybody have any options you feel would be a better fit? Perhaps a Q7?

This car was used for my wife's daily driver, but she'd like something new. Give me your feedback on what you feel should be her next ride...

i think your better off in the 4.6is, the 4.6is has the better transmission, the old m62tu motor feels faster than the n62 motor. i'd say facelift the front end. and upgrade the steering wheel and air bag.

Trust me, everytime I drive the 4.6 I always leave the car with a big grin on my face. My wife is ready for a newer ride so I guess that's the angle we're going to go... I'm looking for alternative SUV's now - any other recommendations? It took me a long time to find the 4.6 I wanted (with the silver accents inside)... Maybe I'll have another talk with the wifey about reconsidering. Providing the reserve doesn't get hit. ;)

Is it really worth the change?

Facelift Front End with Adaptive Bi-Xenon Head Lamps
Seat Material
Trim
Panoramic Sunroof
N62 Engine with X-Drive, and TPM
Crystal Tail Lamps
SCA trunk
BMW Assist

i'm sure i'm leaving out some other things, but if i had the 4.6is i would just keep it and upgrade it.

If it's newness you're after I think the 4.8is may be a good choice. It definately feels newer. The ride is better, the steering feels sharper, and overall it feels more comfortable (especially if you get comfort seats, since I notice you have sports now).

I like the e70 for what they were able to accomplish handling wise with such a large vehicle, but it's hard to ignore how much larger it feels. It feels a bit like riding in a 1st class airplane to me.

Never driven the Q7 so I can't comment on that, but a low mileage 4.8is is still very much a player in the new used car market.

FSETH 08-16-2009 03:08 PM

I know my wife and if she is tired of her car, a face lift and steering wheel just wouldn't cut it.

I would ssay an e70 or a Q5.

You can always try to talk her into waiting for a brand spanking new X1 or X3, but I guess it depends on how many people in your family and how much cargo room you need.

Trustyblonde 08-16-2009 03:16 PM

Bummer that the wife is tired of the X5, I test drove EVERYTHING possible and there was only one that I liked. Obviously the X5. I am keeping mine till it dies or starts to kill the checkbook. I even drove a new diesel and still just love my older one. I drove the Audi Q7 and the smaller new Audi SUV, since I had an Audi vert before I got my X5 and they are ok, but something about the X5 that I just cannot pinpoint, just love it.

My husband is onboard with your wife, he would ditch his in a second he wants an Audi S5.

I'm torn... like I said I'm not certain I want to get rid of it b/c I really enjoy driving it. I love the pep and of course I love the look of it... Any other options out there? Thanks for your help!

Have you tested the X6...preferably the 50i TT? Range Rover Sport SC is a bit heavier but is quite capable. There are plenty of sufficient alternatives out there...you just have to do the research and test them for yourself (and the Mrs. :D )

c4racer 08-17-2009 12:51 PM

How about a Cayenne Turbo? 3 year old models can be had for under 50% of new pricing - great value for a killer SUV. I personally do not think 4.6is to 4.8is is enough of a change, but maybe have her drive a few and see what she thinks. The ML550 is another one to consider.

Ahh, if your really that torn, keep the 4.6 and get her a 4.8. Twice the fun. X10 9.4is :D

rmani 08-17-2009 05:24 PM

must me but i wouldn't go from a 4.6 to a 4.8 youre basically buying the same car except the 4.8 has a few more goodies. if you really want a truck i'd look at a range rover sport

itstony 08-17-2009 06:29 PM

id say range rover sport if you're looking for performance in the RR brand or maybe a porsche?

racelance 08-17-2009 08:56 PM

I love the look of the RR Sport Supercharged however I have a couple friends that owned 'em and had a ton of issues with them. I personally don't like the Porsche's very much... hmm, I watched her drive off today and enjoyed watching the car leave. I have a feeling I might regret the sale of this ride. Darn wife! lol

Divorce the wife and keep the X is another option.

Tested the Ranger Rover sports and the ML 350/450 the Range wins but you will pay more out of pocket cost to own they have a lot more problems ( that is when they do they dont stop) my friend has owned 1 since 04 and it has never had any problems. Major issues with those are the suspensions going out. However its your wife she will no doubt get noticed in the range. I would buy it from you if i did not already have one the X is a beast it scares the crap out of my wife i i was doing about 150 while she was asleep she woke up because she felt herself getting close to the ground. GOOD LUCK nothing will ever feel the same after the X she will notice that

Naz24 08-30-2009 06:35 PM

I ended up selling it to a wonderful couple who will take great care of her... glad to see it! I ended up purchasing an '07 X5 4.8i in prestine condition inside/out with 18,xxx miles on the odometer. My wife loves it and I've enjoy driving it as well.

Here's the new ride:

I'm sure I will... it's a nice ride!

ZsX5o3 09-20-2009 02:44 PM

So what do you think of the change? Handling wise? Power?

racelance 09-20-2009 07:38 PM

The 4.8 feels heavier... it has a nice smooth powerband for sure. It handles very well, similar to the 4.6. I believe both cars are very solid. I did notice the 4.6 appeared to have nicer paint - no orange peal, the 4.8 does have quite a bit of orange peel in the paint. The 4.8 is more refined all around - my wife loves it so that's all that counts.

Cheers,

Lance
