Rear Ended at 70kms/hr in my 4.6is

You hear about things happening in slow motion but you really have no idea what is ment by that until you go through it.
Here are some pics of the damage.

I had enough time after I saw the guy about 2 car lengths behind me to turn the wheel and punch it before inpact. By me doing that, I missed hitting the car in front of me that i noticed had 2 children in the back seat. The corner of his bumper slammed into the center of my bumper while i was at an angle to him. My vehicle was sent flying into a curb that bent one of my front wheels. There was roughly $20,000 damage done to the X5 and the van was a total write off. The roof of the van actually buckled and the drive side door was also pushed back more then an inch trapping him in the vehicle. He had insurance and I easily walked away unharmed. My quarter panels are fine and my roll out deck works fine also. Where the spare tire is, there was no visible damage but the exhaust system was screwed. I had just waxed it and taken some pics about a week prior.

Glad to hear you weren't hurt...sharp reflex and thinking in avoiding the car in front of you

:iagree: At least you saw it coming and were able to prepare and avoid a worse situation. Glad you're OK.

time for a new vehicle

Glad to hear it was only the vehicles that were damaged.

It could have been much worse if it wasn't for your quick reflexes. If you were like many drivers who stop way too close to the car in front you wouldn't have the room to make that maneuver. Well done on both counts.

The parts are the costly bits. I just got off the phone with the body shop. There's zero structural damage. I'm getting a new hatch, tailgate and bumper with new internals and the rims are going to be repaired and powdercoated Ash Grey. As for getting a new vehicle, Not a chance!!! I love this thing. The company I'm contracted with Stimline Services Inc - Oilfield Equipment Manufacturing and Service, Custom Fabrication, Construction Service and Upgrades has become the Canadian Distributor for FLIR thermal night vision FLIR Systems | Night Vision, Infrared Cameras, Thermal Imaging through NAV-TV and I need the write-offs so I don't have to pay tax. This vehicle is becoming a show vehicle/marketing tool. The adaptors to be able to run 2 video outs to my NAV screen will be supplied by NAV-TV (NAV-TV) who is also the distributor for Ulta Speakers (http://ultrasubs.com/ ) I'm going to outfit my ride with those also. From the spec sheets, the air space needed for the subs is incredibly low in comparison to other competitive brands.

I'll take pics when it comes back but it will be better then ever.

We're going to go with a brand new factory 4.6L exhaust because I want the oval tips that are welded on the muffler itself.

Good job on the quick thinking.

I've been rear-ended twice in my life, both times while in stopped traffic.

Watching a car get bigger and bigger in your rear view mirror is horrifying. Being able to think fast at times like that is, as they say, priceless.
