Clonking sound from the back
 
Hi, anyone experiencing a clonking sound from rear of the car when you move of from stationary.. placing my friend behind the wheel and crawling around in the back trying to localize it but to no vain...

Suggestions welcome...

Rear disc brake groan, emergency brake catching, play in suspension components, improper lug torque, wheel or axle bearings...what model year and type of engine/option packages do you have?

X5 3.0 Diesel 2002.... with approx 70k miles on the clock fitted with so called sports kit..

Ah, Will, you're in Europe then? This is just a hunch, but check the rear stabilizer links, #5 on this page.

If you are getting the noise while maneuvering at lower speeds, I'd bet money that yours need replacing.

Is it possible your exhaust may be loose?

Had the same problem on mine. Took it to the main dealer under extended warranty, they realigned the rear door catches and hinges, never heard a thing since. 2002 3.0D

Yepp and problem found...so right you are in your diagnostics... rear bushes worn and this causes the clonking sound... now know what to do next lazy sunday...

So which do you think it is? Doors, suspension or exhaust?

Rear anti-rollbar bushes... problem now sorted...
