Ah, Will, you're in Europe then? This is just a hunch, but check the rear stabilizer links, #5 on this page.
If you are getting the noise while maneuvering at lower speeds, I'd bet money that yours need replacing. Is it possible your exhaust may be loose? JV

Had the same problem on mine. Took it to the main dealer under extended warranty, they realigned the rear door catches and hinges, never heard a thing since. 2002 3.0D

Yepp and problem found...so right you are in your diagnostics... rear bushes worn and this causes the clonking sound... now know what to do next lazy sunday...
