Your x5 will slide like a big boat on ice. I refuse to take out my x5 again until I get my winter tires installed. Good luck. I am sure everyone here on the board are concern about the general public safety and yours.

i don't know if it's just the differences in the way we drive, or the difference in weather... :dunno:

So now you guys have experienced what our life is up north. Ironically we didn't get that storm. I was amazed to see that much snow in Virginia, Washington, Phily etc.

So now you know why the people up north have big biceps. Lol

Good luck with the shoveling.

Depends on how cold it is where you live. 18" OEM wheels. Bridgestone Blizzak, Continental Winter contact, Pirelli Scrpion Ice and snow, and Dunlop Grandtrek WT M3 are all good.

I would much rather be driving on a road with people who know how to drive in the snow with less the ideal tires than I would people who don't change their driving style with studded snow tires.

An AWD car can get around just find especially in deep snow (ice can really make things difficult) if the driver knows how to stop the vehicle without barely using the brakes...

my apologizes if my wording was not the best choice of words, but the fact that driving in 10+ inches of snow on summer tires is just asking for a accident. I see it all the time after the 1st snowfall - because it does take a accident or a very harsh scary slide for some guys to respect physics.

Regardless of dedicated winters for this weather, FWIW, I forgot the magic #, but at around 40-38 degress F, there is considerable traction loss with summer rubber compounds. Just some food for thought as well....

juppalgae -

Nokian tires IMO make the best studded and unstudded tire IMO. They make a AMAZING studded tire as well (carried overseas) that is coming stateside closer towards end of Feb-March.

Plenty of good winter tires out there like the ones LeMans mentions. Nokians are just my defacto preference.

In the province of Quebec the law say that every car on the road must have snow tire installed by dec 15 thru april 15 if I'm not mistaking. All season tire are prohibited in winter.

Drove out to east end of Island yesterday. They have close to two feet of snow and it was beautiful. The Good Year RSA do not seem to handle the snow as well as the MXV4 on my old X5. The tread would easily fill with snow and then slip and slide. Both tires are supposed to be all season tires but the MXV4 seem much better in snow.

All season tires should do it...

This is my first snow season with All Season tires on my 19's and it performed well. I bought a set of Pirelli Scorpion Assimetricos cuz I didn't want the hassel of changing wheels during the winter. So far so good!
