Inner CV joint grease different than outer?
Changing front CV outer boot. Went to smack off the outer shaft/bearing retainer from the main shaft, and the entire main shaft w/inner triple roller and inner boot came out. Whereas the outer CV joint contains what looks like a grease, the inner looks brown and more like a heavy weight oil. It can't be diff fluid, and the inner boot isn't torn, so no water could have gotten in.
Anyone explain that? |
I seem to remember something like that on my old volvo, when I got boot kits from dealer, they had grease packs with same stuff for inner and outer. Maybe heat + age from being closer to trans/engine ?

it is a different fluid, its normal

What kind of lubricant is it, as I need to replace it now?
I guess I can just use the "standard" cv joint grease.....the service manual just refers to it as "cv joint grease", like it does for the outers. Mahalo. |
the inner repair kit comes with a pouch of this grease.
