Stop engine oil pressure!!!!!
I started up the 01 X4.4 this AM and it was a rougher than usual start and the message "stop engine oil pressure" comes on. Before I could shut it off the engine smoothed right out. Shut the car off, checked the oil (full and it has been since last change 30 days ago). re started and runs like a top again. The SES light is on now but it runs fine, if anything it idles smoother? One thing I noticed is that there is a a whine sound for the first 30 seconds on start (like a fan ). I have seen this code before about 6 months ago after washing it. No issues till today. My code reader is lent out so i thought I would throw this out there in case anyone has had the same set of circumstances.
Thanks |
Not sure what happened but your whine is most likely your aux air pump and is normal. I just went through the oil separator issue and BMW has agreed to replace the associated parts so this may be the cause of your SES light. Check out posts for "oil separator" and good luck

Had the separator issue dealt with last month. New hoses etc. Ran like a top and still does, just wondering if I have a bad sensor?

look for cracked, torn, or disconnected hoses. This will cause some rough running also

Well got in and drove it home tonight and no SES light? I don't get it, these things are haunted. Everytime i see that light I think 1K.

Well, same thing happened tonight, exactly one day after washing it....same as last time now that I think about it. Started...ran rough, restarted and ran fine. Parked it 20 minutes later started it and "oil pressure message" shows up. Shut it off right away and restart, runs fine but SES light shows up. Will pull the code tomorrow and see whats up? Could this be a cam position sensor as there was a stored code for that last time that never came back? Gremlins or????

Did the message happen under heavy braking?

no just on start up and has done so before after washing. I was looking on the 540 E39 forums and it's documented there. Seems to be a clogged filter or bad switch located by the oil filter. I'm thinking of just replacing that. I have had the pressure checked and it's fine as is oil level. I think the cam position sensor is gone as well so it is doing two things here. The CPS has thrown codes before but my mechanic forgot to write down which one and cleared the code!!! Was waiting for it to happen for the last three months so we could see which it was. Looks fairly easy as a DIY so I may change them myself if I have time this week. Need a good DIY document for a 4.4i though. Most are for 3.0 that I can see.
Thanks |
Replaced both cam sensors tonight with OEM replacements. The X runs very smooth to the point where I cant tell if it's running sitting at a light. I was under the impression that sensors either worked or didn't, and did not expect an improvement. But there you go. I'd recommend just changing them as maintenence at 90-100K I guess.
