CPO question
 

Hi all:

I bought my '05 X at Carmax about 7 weeks ago with about 59k on the clock. I paid for an extended warranty thru them, which covers pretty much everything as long as I bring it to them for repair. I had the "self level suspension inactive" problem this week and brought it to Carmax. They needed to take it to the local BMW dealer to have the codes read. Turned out all they had to do was clear the code. When I picked up the X at Carmax they gave me a receipt of the work from the BMW dealer. On that receipt it indicates that the client (me, presumably) is a CPO owner. I was unaware of this fact till now, never given any documentation about it, and I'm not sure if it IS true. I plan to call the dealer tomorrow and check, but I wondered if anyone here knew of a way for me to confirm that I do or don't have CPO? Is there a source I can check with my VIN? :dunno:I couldn't find this question answered online, so I apologize if I missed this in another thread. If I've got CPO I can cancel the extended warranty and get my $$ back in my wallet, where it belongs :D

Not true. A CPO warranty is only transferable in private party purchases. As soon as a dealer claims the title, it is finito. It probably was a CPO when traded in to Carmax which is why BMW records it as a CPO vehicle. You don't have the CPO paperwork which is signed by the dealer who originally writes the CPO, you would have that if you bought it from a private party.

OP, I am not aware of any source online that shows you that info. Perhaps registering on BMW owners circle website and see if they have that info on your VIN?


Wagner, this is the first time I am hearing that a CPO ends when a used car dealer gets the car. Many local dealers here are selling BMW CPO'ed cars and are advertising them as CPO.

I had a similar situation, though I found out when at a BMW dealer for 4/50 warranty work. I was inquiring about an aftermarket warranty through the BMW dealer when they looked it up and told me. Call a BMW dealer and say you would like to check the CPO status of your vehicle. They can pull it up by VIN and let you if it has the CPO extended warranty as well as the "in service date" (therefore when it expires timewise).

Have a dealer run a vehicle history report on it and that should tell you.

Again, if CARMAX is where you bought it, it is not CPO'd anymore, regardless if it was before.

A CPO warranty does not follow the vehicle where ever it may go, by default, like the original factory warranty. Even if BMW had taken the car back from the individual with the original CPO, they would have to certify it again. This was the case in 2006, I have heard that BMW may allow you now to file a transfer fee to keep the CPO, but you'd have to get that from a BMW dealer. One other item I read was that BMW CPO, if bought from a non-BMW dealer, had to get registered with BMW within 30 days to maintain the CPO. :dunno:

Thanks for all your excellent advice and suggestions. I tend to agree with Wagner, and more than likely he's correct. That having been said, if there's a possibility that I can end up cancelling my extended warranty and getting a $1500 refund by just making 1 phone call, it's a call I'd make all day long lol. So I'll call the BMW dealer who did the service work yesterday just to confirm the CPO status. I'll post my results. I'm sure if any of you thought you might potentially be able to get $1500 returned to you for a warranty you don't need, you'd make the call too:-)

Update:

I spoke with the local BMW dealer who had performed my service work yesterday. This is where I first became aware the X may have a CPO. I spoke to a SA, who told me I DID have the CPO. I asked if CPO follows the VIN, not the owner; she said that's correct. I asked her to provide me with some documentation, and she faxed me a "Warranty Vehicle Inquiry" report for my VIN. It shows me as the current owner, and it shows the CPO for my '05 was put into effect 1/10/05, expiring 1/10/11 or 100k miles.

Based on (a) my BMW service receipt yesterday indicating "Client has CPO Warranty, (b) my conversation with the SA at BMW, and (c) the documentation she faxed in support of her statement, I have to believe I DO have CPO. Anyone care to comment? Am I misreading this in any way? Before I go ahead and cancel my extended warranty, I want to make darned sure my butt is covered by CPO. TIA!

I guess the only thing your are missing is the official booklet that you get with it that has your car written in it and describes the program in detail. I posted it before. See post # 17.

Therefore, when a dealer like Carmax takes ownership, then they have the CPO vehicle, which can then be transferred to a subsequent owner...
