Same problem as you. Had to go back to the dealer twice under warranty for faulty fuel level sender. 01 btw.

I have the same problem on a 2001 and of course my X5 is out of warrenty. Can anyone tell me what the dealer quoted to replace the fuel sensor / sender? I'd get it fixed because it represents a safety issue if I run out of gas in the middle of the night or in the middle of nowhere. Seems like BMW might want to issue a service notice and if the problem appears, repair at no charge.

Does it happen all the time or intermittently? When it happens, is it when your gas tank is REALLY low?

Hey, where in NoVA are you? I can point you towards a good independent shop.

Now it pretty much happens all the time. It used to be intermittently but have noticed the occurances much more frequently. I always notice it when the gas tank is low (yellow light on) as I usually don't fill up until the tank is low. I'm in Reston, VA and work in Sterling, VA. Any good shop recommendations is appreciated.

Both independent shops I can recommend to you are in Alexandria-
Alexandria Bavarian Service
(703) 836-2002

Martin Motorsports
(703) 823-9737
http://www.martinmotorsportsinc.com/

I've had my X serviced/modded at Martin, and the owner, Gary, is a good friend of mine. That's him waving out the window of one his many 3's on the intro page of their site. The other place is the shop that a co-worker who has a '97 3 series has been going to for 5+ years with really good result.
