So an update: The inline volume control did work in terms of getting the radio to recognize the aux input with the bluetooth device. Unfortunately the one I purchased from Amazon in the previous post converted the signal to mono. I immediately noticed a reduction in sound quality and confirmed the mono by setting all iphone output to the right side but still heard sound in the left speaker in the car.

Looks like I'll just have to find a higher quality inline volume cable.

Hi so I've been trying every aux cable kit I've found or recommended and my X5 won't read the aux. will adding this volume knob work for it to be recognized? And did you find a better solution so it wouldn't convert to mono?

My solution was to buy the cable parts from Maplin and just make the Aux cable. I can't recall exactly the pieces but there was a resistor across the two channels, something like 300kOhm, which allows the head unit to know that Aux is an option. I think both channels were de-coupled with something like a 0.22uF ceramic capacitor, typical audio stuff, and the ground was common. Cost around £6.

If the L and R channels don't have a resistive connection, "Aux" will not show in the menu on the head unit.

The key discovery for me with Aux is that on install the volume level is low for safety reasons. With Aux selected, use the buttons 1 through 6 to get the right level.

So I tried tackling this and well I couldn't get it to see an aux input. I ended up using a 330ohm resistor instead of the 300ohm. Would that be the problem?

Not likely - a 10% variation in resistance is not enough to cause the AUX. input to remain un-detected. Time to look deeper...

My aux input cable doesnt have any resistor, and it works fine anyway
