Just recently had a similar experience in a Jag XJR... leaving my house with coffee in hand. it spilled, I ran into the curb (less than 20mph) and the wheel didn't look much worse than yours. Long story short, over 10K in axle, undercarriage/frame damage( I was expecting less than my deductible $500). After the repair, I immediately went out and traded for the X5. Not to worry though, 2 completely different vehichles, I'm sure yours is only minor. Good Luck!

I would take NO chance with your 4.8 equipped with those fat Diamaris on any snow-covered roads. It's wise to invest in set of 18" winter setup. It's a small investment compared to getting into an accident which might cost you thousands of dollars. AWD won't help if you don't have any traction.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. DO NOT RISK IT.

I was in slush last night in <1 in of snow on the 20s and could not stop. ABS, etc., kept sliding. Luckily, I knew what to expect, and stopped far before I needed to.

I ski at Whistler once a year, and I can tell you that if you get into any slushies, you will be able to go, but not stop nor steer.

I agree!! Do not risk driving the X with regular tires in the snow!! I just proved it and I was only going 20mph.

I just removed the lower control arm. Ouch! It is definately bent. Will get a replacement ASAP Monday. When I read the instructions it mentioned that the wheel did not need to be supported, but I was having an impossible time removing the arm. I removed the bolt completely from the frame, the whell side was already removed. I jacked up the wheel and the control arm just fell off. EASY!! A good suggestion for anyone else doing this job.

Since I removed the tire I checked for leaks, saw none. No foreign objects, and this AM it still had some air from yesterday. I'll have to take it in to get it checked out. The rim on the front and rear are definately scratched.

Now I have a few more Q's
Do I need to remove anything from the old control arm to put on the new one??
I saw that my CV Boots are split wide open on both driver's and passenger's sides. Easy to replace?? Or better to get a whole new CV joint?? I have never heard any noises or vibrations when I drive.
Last I saw some fluid on the protective undercarriage metal under the engine/tranny. Could this accident have caused a leak somewhere? It seems real unlikely to me.

wow, what a bummer. I just did the same thing last night with a brand new 5 series. My story seems the same as yours, except there is no noticable change in the alignment from the outside, but it pulls like crazy toward that side. I also have a strange hum only when the wheel is in motion, and it gets louder when I turn. Any guesses as to what might have happened? Let me know what you end up going through, that is if anything else beside the control arm and a new alignment are necessary, and good luck!

it looks like you have a bent control arm and/or rim. do you have a leak in the rim cause its cracked? is it out of alignment?? is the tire side wall damaged??

you need a new control arm, rim, and wheel. you need to remove the rim and check the entire assembly.
Hey your were right DREX it just needes the lower control arm. Easy replacement. I took a close look at the rims on the drivers side and they are scratched and dinked. Bummer!! I might need to replace them, but first some 17s and snow tires.

My 19s after the accident has some grass and a pebble that were mashed between the tire and the rim. That is the cause of the leak. Strange. Not a big leak, but a leak non the less.
