Inspection II - Bad or fair price?
Hey Guys -
My local Indy shop quoted me $900 for Inspection II - but wait, I know that's a little high, but they include a little more than the traditional Inspection II from what I've read on this forum. Still costly, I agree, considering a lot of Inspection II is simply inspecting BS. But here's what they are offering for $900 in terms of tangibles: *New NGK plugs *New fuel filter *Replace transfercase fluid *Replace differential fluids *BMW brand oil change/filter **Price does not include new air filter and micro filter since I told them I just replaced those myself I asked the SA how much it would cost for those services individually. Here's what they would cost: *New plugs - $300 *Fuel filter - $200 *Transfercase fluid - $121 *Differential fluids - $121 *BMW brand oil change/filter - $100 Total - $842 $842 is less than the $900 for the all inclusive Inspection II, but supposedly, they are supposed to closely inspect all aspects of the car for $900 - under Inspection II. I'm sure a lot of people see these as DIY - but I am mechanically challenged except for replacing things like the air and micron filter, oh and the wiper blades. I think the main difference is that they include replacing the transfercase fluid and differential fluids. I'm at 63k miles and think it's probably a good idea to replace those fluids. Not sure what BMW recommends. So, is this a bad or fair deal? Thanks for your input! |
Imo, a bit pricey, but I don't know where in the "USA" you are.
I got a very thorough "Insp II", (as in two techs crawling all over the car, per the checklist and beyond for a couple hours), fuel filter, micro filter, air filter, plugs, plug connectors, oil and filter, manual trans fluid change, diff & trans case fluid change, couple pulleys changed on fan situ, and new rear brake pads and rotors, for about a grand. This was done by my BMW/PCar specialist Indie here in Western NC, so it may be slightly less than a metro area. I am not saying your quote is outrageous, but comparing it to my situ, it seems a tad high...but, certainly cheaper than any dlr. My 50Cts. GL, mD |

I dug out my bill...it was $1020 plus tax, all parts and labor.
German Motorwerks, Asheville, NC. Not NY or Chi or LA, but quality work in a NASCAR clean shop, 6 lifts, an alignment bay and, packed with BMWs, PCars and the occasional MB. 2 years ago...so maybe his prices for that work have escalated. You might ask your Indie for a quote on all the parts/labor/services in your list, minus the Insp II, and see what he says, just for drill. Though I appreciated the Inspection Scott's gang did at German MotorWerks, and I got to watch the very thorough "going over", they did. GL, mD |

BMW charges $25 each plug, go to oreilly auto and they have same NGK plug for $7.99ea. You could diy all for less than 300 I believe. $900 for just those items is ridiculous.
oil filter @napa $10 oil $50-60 spark plugs $70(8cyl) fuel filter $? cheap online doing your own work and saving $600- priceless |
Called my Indy and he wanted $560 just for the transfer case fluid change and differential fluid change. This was my reaction:
