No, I'm talking about the rolling diameter. The measurement of the OUTSIDE tire diameter.

For example, a Continental Extreme Contact DWS tire in the size of 275/45-19 measures 28.7" outside tire diameter (sometimes called overall diameter). You need a setup that is the same or very close to the same overall diameter as 28.7"

So, its easier to do this if you have the same diameter sized wheels. Just find same size tires that fit on all your wheels.

mr.powers nope you didn't catch my point, i rotated my wheels side to side at rear, didnt take them up front, also tire guy said installing 255/50 tires on the the existing alloys that have 285/45 tires on them was not going to work..they will fit but as per previous posts i will be fitting a tire that is 30mm narrower than the current one, so not sure how it will stretch or if it will stretch or will just leave gap between the edge of the tire and alloy lip....hmmm hmmm

I didnt miss the point at all!I just didnt see the point of roating your tyres on the same axle,so I assumed you meant the front axle!
Swapping your rear tyres ,as Twinpoppas ,also correctly said, cannot bring up sensor error!Only problem you would have ,would be on the road driving,if the tyres were directional!
The 255/50 tyre on a 10" wheel is not perfect but some here have fitted it here, including myself ,and no,it doesnt stretch or leaves gap between alloy and tyre and will be almost flat with wheel, bearing in mind that the 255 tyre has a uninflated width of 25.5 cms ,against the 25.4 cms width of the 10" wheel.Does this make sense to you now?
Like I am saying and so are other members here, its not ideal but possible and some have done it and had no problems. So,its choice, and your reason to have 255 all round,in order to rotate them, is a valid reason.

Dont know why the tyre place guy didnt want to test fit it!This way you could see for yourself!

The fitting of 275/45 all round ,as Twinpoppas, is an option. You would only be riding on a 8mm lower diametre tyre and a 1.08% speedo error,so this should not set off any sensor errors:)

i couldn't be bothered reading thru all the posts but........... the op wants to be able to rotate his tyres.

so why not get a pair of 19 x 9 wheels (same as front) with 255 tyres and stick them on the back, use spacers as already suggested so the back looks the same as it did with the wider (staggered set up)

that way he will have exact same wheels and tyres at each corner and can rotate to even out wear

i have thought of this for myself but going to 19 x 10 rims all round with 15 - 20 mm spacers only on the back

powers twinnspopas and all the others who have kindly contributed I take note of the recommendations you made, will ask the tire to whack on the 255/50's on the rear, pretty sure I will get the tire pressure warning light come on the dash but that is easy to reset....thanks again

sorry to say it but you are wasting your time and money trying 255 width tyres on your rear 10 inch rims, you still cant rotate them with out removing them from the rims,

cause you really wouldn't want to put the 10 inch rims on the front and the 9,s on the rear would you.

i appreciate what you say about needing to watch your pennies ,however my original comments still stand.

if you get a matching set of 4 wheels to what you already have and keep the 4, 9 inch wide rims, your two and the new two,

then sell off the 4, 10 inch rims, (your back two and the new two)

you may actually come out ahead

i seriously believe this is your BEST option, if you dont want staggered wheels

omodos 10-12-2010 03:46 AM

np will remove em from rims.....thanks for replies

Hey maybe I got lost in the posts but..I also want to de-stagger my X5. What would you think about swapping wheels if they are the same type? I really don't care about the width so if you have a preference and they match maybe we could work something out. LMK
