safe to change rear alloy size to match front alloys?
 

oh man i think i have asked this before but cannot find the post, so here it goes, due to the desire to rotate my tires(cant as i have staggered), i would like to replace my rear 5 star spoke alloys (285/45 r19) with (255/50 r19) so they match the front alloys and alloy me to do the rotation, now is there any issue with this?will i need new lug bolts etc?

I have found a set of 255/50 r19s for the rear s but they are for a landrover! will they fit?

You say you want to replace you 5 spoke alloys(285/45/19) with 255/50/19!You mean you want to put a 255/50 tyre on your rear 10" alloy?
the 255/50 set you found and say its for a LR!Tyres are universal ,not for any make....
If all you want is to fit the 255/50 on the rear 10",they will be a tight squeeze but should fit and no,you you wont need new bolts,since the wheel is the same...:thumbup:

ta for reply first of all, sorry to be so vague, ok at my front (factory set-up) i have 255/50 with 19" bmw alloys 5 spoke type, rears are 285/45 19" again 5 spoke star, I want to trash the rear alloys and use 255/50 size tyres on the relevant alloys i.e the same type as the front and i guess they differ to the rears?, i cannot just stick 255/50 tyres on the already existing alloys as they are narrower slightly

There shouldn't be any problem. Plenty of X5s out there w/o a staggered setup. Also, plenty of people have done what you're thinking about (running the same wheels/tires at all corners) for the same reason.

ta for reply pappao2twins, ok let me twist question a bit, if i keep my alloys at the back that are slightly wider i.e 285/45....285mm and out on 255/50 tires on this alloy would that be a risk of the tires popping off or not filling rim correctly and losing pressure?etc?

Depends on the wheel size. Are you running factory wheels now? What style and what are your wheel specs? What size are your rear wheels? Are they 10" wide?

The front wheels are 9" while the rears are 10".Even if you fit the 255/50 on the rear it should still be ok and the rear wheel/tyre set up will still stick out 3mm more than the front.
From a cost amd practical point of view ,my advice to you would be to go to a tyre fitting place and ask them to fit a 255/50 tyre on a 10" rear wheel and check for yourself and get the tyre place opinion also.:)
Alternatively ,just go and buy another front set wheels ,9x19 and if you want to keep the same sticking out look on the rear as the standard 10" rear wheels,get 20mm spacers .

powers and twinspoppa ta for replies, yup have staggered factory setup 132 LA 5 star spokes, at the rear tires are 285/45 r19 which i thought equate to 285mm wide (about 11 inches) and the front 255/50 r19 are 255mm about 10 inches wide, so yup may have to do this, will stick a set of 255/50 tires on the back, they are narrower by about 1inch and lower by 1.25 cm but as long as the garage guys dont say they will pop off and also throw off my sensors due to ride height etc then i will go for them as i will then be able to rotate em all way round:D(if they are not unidirectional that is:yikes: )

Regardless, if you want to use 255/50-19 tires, the max recommended wheel width is 9" - so 10" is too wide.

However, If you want to be able to use your existing staggered setup with the SAME tires front & back - you can use 275/45-19 safely.

275/45-19s can be mounted all the way up to 10.5" wide rims.

Don't worry too much about the width of the tire. Its the width of the wheel that will dictate what tires you can put on.

As above, if you have 19x9 & 19x10 wheels you can't use 255/50-19s safely on all four wheels. However, you CAN use the 275/45-19s safely on all four of your existing wheels.

Also, if you're concerned about the speedo being off, using 275s will make your speedo read 1.2% faster. At an indicated 60mph the actual speed will only be 59.3 mph.

So, it'll help you from speeding too much (a tiny little bit)! :D
