tranny filter
 

i had to replace my tranny at 75000 miles. cost me $6000. i was told there is no servicing of the tranny (automatic) now im reading about a fliter?? are we talking a standard tranny? if not where is it located

No wayyy,
Like any other Auto box it is not a sealed piece of hardware,it's serviceable as any other transmission out there.
Since I bought my X I had the fluid and filter change,after I got into the rebuild as it was acting funny.
Rebuild went well,but they used just a "whatever" aftermarket filter when they put it all together,so it's got clogged after 500 kms or so.
Here's a story from the service adviser at our local dealership..he said that there's no filter for the tranny..I was surprised as I knew there was one :)
Anyway..people say stupidities from time to time,that's why it's essential to get a second opinion..ALWAYS and this site rocks!
Now..was yours swapped by the dealer?

the stealer wanted $7500 for the tranny alone. my local tranny shop did a swap with a bmw new one (i watched him do it) for less. its like new but im concerned about checking/ changing fluid. there is no dipstick even. he checked around and said no one even rebuilds them. so.... it doesnt have a pan like an american car.

Sorry to disappoint you,but I think you've got a rebuilt one installed.
Is your X 3.0 or 4.4 which year?
Man worked on my tranny said fluid is good for 80.000 kms or roughly 45.000 miles I think.
My X is 4.4 '00 and it's got a ZF gear box and it's perfectly serviceable unit.

If your is fine and feels like new,why bothering yourself,just drive you truck,and you better drive it hard enough,plenty of guys here have original boxes for hundreds of thousands of miles with out problems.

nope it was new from bmw. i picked it up for the shop that did it. and there isnt a pan on the trans. way different than that pic you showed. it blew at 75k miles of easy driving. now has 97 on the truck so if i could change the fluid id like to. mine is an 02 4.4 auto trans. dealer told me he does alot of replacements around 75k. maybe germany sends crappy trans to the US? lol

This is why you need to be a more active reader :) The "no servicing" of the tranny has been changed to every 100k, but even then it's too much and you are amongst many others with transmissions failing left and right due to what is my opinion of a complete lack of servicing.

There is no dipstick as it's checked via having it in a certain temperature range and pumping fluid into the fill hole until it starts flowing back out. There are places that rebuild these transmissions, so he's inaccurate on that statement. Of course it has a pan, where else would the filter be located under? I hope your mechanics abilities are better than his opinions and the incorrect information that he's spreading around as fact.

I clicked the link to RealOEM, and that is the pan. Clearly you don't know what you're looking at on the actual vehicle. I service customer and my own transmissions at 50k like clockwork. Problem is most people are already well beyond that, which adds some validity to opinions around here that changing the fluid dislodges sediment inside the transmission...at this point, it's personal prefence if people still want to change the fluid. If the transmission isn't hard shifting, slamming into gear, etec then I would do it anyways, but that's me.

Hell, for those worried about changing the fluid and dislodged sediment, at least change the filter and clean the magnets than reuse the fluid like Esso suggests. I don't think any of the opinions around here can fault that.
