Transmission filter
 

Guys ,does anybody know if an aftermarket transmission fluid filter could cause the transmission pump whine while cold,once warmed up noises are gone.
Tranny was rebuilt and those noises appeared approximately 500 kms after.
I am bringing the X in to get checked.
Which filter brand should I use?

P.S. the installed one is $11.00 or so bucks...I bet isn't an OE one.

I would be interested to know as well. I've got a non-bmw filter waiting to be installed.

The whine noise while cold could be caused by a blockage in the filter. That could be due to a poorly constructed filter, or it could be due to the aftermath of a fluid change. The fresh fluid has high detergents, which tend to flush out all the gunk in the transmission. Those deposits can settle in the filter, and/or the valve body.

I think it is risky to use anything other than the OE filter. Since there don't seem to be any published specifications for the filter (flow capacity, pressure drop, micron rating) any aftermarket filter that claims to be correct is probably just one that is the same physical size. It may work, or it may not. That seems to me to be pretty much a coin toss; if so you have a 50% chance of it working fine.

Should I buy a ZF Filter KIt which is OEM BTW? or just a filter which is either IBS EOM or Miestersatz which is not OE..

i dont know, im always weary of buying non oem only because it turns out more expensive then just doing it oem the first time.

I think ZF would be fine, in the original packaging, or BMW.

This has been discussed many times on Bimmerforums, www.e38.org, etc. The problem is that the filter isn't as internally braced as a good quality OE replacement, so that sucking noise is the filter collapsing under it's own pressure. You really need to get that filter replaced asap.

I am bringing it to the dealership for service tomorrow,will pass by the parts department and get kit's price checked,if it's extremely expensive I am gonna get one online.
Does the o ring and gaskets need to be swapped along with the filter or it's a reusable stuff?

It was a crappy filter,filter changed for a Filtran branded one.
Thank you a LOT guys, the embarrassing noise is gone...I am loving my X even more now !
