I had my 7 at a shop for 3 days while they we're installing my 3.46 LSD and by the time I returned to the car after I got a call saying it was ready, I arrived 45 minutes lated and the car was still on the lift, the battery was dead, they somehow broke my rearview mirror mounted radar detector and had (re) broken my seats side bolster. Needless to say I wasn't happy and their name was slandered in my forum signature for about 3yrs over on Bimmerforums. I cannot honestly think of ONE good experience I've had at any repair facilities throughout the Seattle area, which is the leading reason why I've learned to do it all myself...I've still got a bad taste in my mouth when I think about it.

I would demand the parts to be inventoried, boxed, placed in the X5, and towed to your house, and all monies refunded until some work that you paid for is accomplished when they have the time to do it. At least having possession of it would make me sleep better at night. When not in your possession, time goes by and little things could "happen". Even if it is at your cost, I would call a rig (and possibly police) and have them meet you at that shop today so that delivery goes smoothly. Pictures, pictures, pictures. Stick only to e-mail for communications. Document everything, just in case.

Breaking up is so hard to do....

Stand your ground man.

Jeez if mine wern`t fixed in 5 days there would be a small war . If it were me Id be there tomorrow , at dawn , to collect it . If any money has changed hands I would get it refunded there and then or the small war would escalate . Sorry but they are walking all over you . Get it sorted .

I called my bro-n-law, on another topic, and relayed the OP's story; he laughed out loud.
They have 2 Xs, and a 6er in their tranny shop this week. Both will be out the door by Friday;
the only arm wrestle is over the length of warranty the customer(s) want, which is pretty typical in that biz.

The OP should take some heed of suggestions here; you are being taken to the cleaners, time-wise at least,
and maybe "quality" of tech work, too.

As stated earlier, hire a tow truck, send it down to the shop and pick up the X unannounced. You don't want to give them a chance to do anything to it. Don't pay them nothing and get your parts. If they say they will sue you, tell them you're gonna sue them for keeping your X for that long. They've had your car for 5 months! Find a good tranny shop and have it fixed there. If a shop had my car for 5 months trying to fix the tranny, I would NEVER let them touch it again. Midnight mechanics....GET IT OUT OF THEIR SHOP, NOW!!!

Where is your brothers shop? Can you find out about how much he would charge to rebuild a transmission on an 01 4.4.

There are no reviews for any transmission shops around here all I have to go by is word of mouth and it seems that everyone but myself has had good experiences with the shop that has my X. I am ready to get this over with and my dad is ready for me to give him his truck that I have been driving back so he can quit racking up the miles on his GTO.

He is in north New Jersey, doesn't need the work, and I won't toss his pricing around on the net; when it comes to tranny work, the pricing by anyone is all over the map,
due to core exhchange or rebuild or ...add in levels of "warranty" and it gets confusing for the customer.

I simply ref'd that he does BMW trans with regularity, and none take "5 months".

Unbelievable! I'm sure this guy, after having your X 5 months of sitting around, forgot how to put it back together. Get you X out of there NOW, TODAY!! Seriously!!!

m5james 10-28-2010 11:08 PM

I was thinking the exact same thing!!!! I'd have forgetten as well.

i took mine to a local tranny shop that ive done business with for over 30 yrs. with his discount he purchased a new oem for $5000 then charged me $500 to swap, he gave me a break cus he felt sorry it cost so much. this was his 1st X5 job. he said he couldnt find a rebuilt kit for it. id rather spend the extra money to get it back in 3 days as i did. i also could have gotten a 10k used one for $3500. but who knows how honest the junk yard guys are?

i dont think i would be able to wait this long without knocking a few of his teeth out for incentive.
