Fuel burning heater

Evening gent,
I'm posting on behalf of a mate who is due to pick up his X5 on Friday. He's getting a 3.0D sport. I've got a RangeRover and i know they are very similar and share a lot of gear due to BMW owning landrover at the time. So I’m basing most of my knowledge on them being similar.
The question is do all diesel X5's have the fuel burning heater? if they do is it accessed via the OBD like in the rangerovers? Not sure if I’m right but the heater option only consisted of the remote to start the heater externally? If they don’t what is req to get one fitted?
Thanks in advance
Rob

The Webasto heater was a separate option. If it isn't fitted (look underneath, under the passenger seat on a RHD vehicle) then you would require the full kit to install it.

Hi,
All diesel x5s were fitted with the heater but to use it for heating the inside of the car whilst parked was an after thought and therefore was an optional extra at BMW. You can however retrofit a relay which comes with a remote for about £40 which is easy to fit.

Cheers guy but im totally confused now. Thedweeb you say it's there but has no remote but could be used via the onboard comp?
JCL your saying some do have it some don't?:dunno:

Firstly, it varied via geographic marketing organization. I have corresponded with UK posters who do not have it installed on their 3.0d models, but maybe their heaters had been removed. If thedweeb is in the UK and says they all had it, that is good enough for me. What you need to do in either case is look underneath the vehicle and see if you see the exhaust outlet for the diesel-fired heater. If it is there, it doesn't matter if they all had it or not.

The remote control is an option. Thedweeb doesn't say you can control it via the onboard computer, he says that you can buy a kit with a relay to enable the OBC control.

I have a 3.0D and it has the heater. No remote needed, it is accessed through the Menu on the NAV screen as the "Auxillary heater". I also read in the MANUAL that it comes on automatically when the temperature is low enough when the car is first started so you get warmed up before the engine is warm enough.

However, here in Sydney, Australia, it will NEVER get that cold for it to come on, or for me to use it.

Well it was an option on mine in 2003 and it always comes with a remote.
But forget about looking underneath the seats for it...just open the bonnet and if you have the Webasto heater,it will be behind the fuel filter...(see pic)

Also,as JCL says ,if you look underneath the vehicle ,you will have a tiny exhaust pipe at the front left side.

Bmw recommend that even if you dont use it,to turn on periodically(every 5000 kms or every 6 months).

Anyone wanting one ,it seems that Rbo135 doesnt need his:rofl:

As said you can control it via the nav screen under aux. However if yours only says aux vent and not Aux heating you will need the simple mod to get it to work or you can activate it buy plugging in a scanner and programing the cars software to give you the option. Have you looked on xdrivers.co.uk ?

how could you get it to work if you dont have the nav touch screen

i have the heater ( not that i will ever need it in Queensland) but have no idea how to make it work.

i have the "Business CD" under the flap so probably the basic sound system

so are there still options to control the heater?????

Yes there is. Over here in the UK you can buy a small relay that is simply wired into the conector of the heater and onto a 12v supply. With the relay comes a remote control which you use to switch the live supply via the relay to the heater. But as you said being in queensland you will never need it,over here its currently -2 so cold.:(
