Naz,
I just got a letter from BMW NA stating the same voluntary recall on 2004 X5s. The subject is titled: BMW VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN PROGRAM CONTROL UNITS CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10E-A03 Exerpt from the letter: "The software release for the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Transmission Control Unit (TCU) contained errors. This may result in an onboard diagnostic communication failure with a scan tool during an emission test." I think this is a legitimate problem...but up to you if you want to take it in to get the ECU and TCU reprogrammed. The risk if you don't is a failed emissions test. Key point: "BMW will repair your vehicle free of charge for parts and labor." |
The letter also states: "Failure to have this complimentary repair work performed could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle, and may jeopardize your full protection under the emissions warranty provisions." There is also mention of a cert they will give you upon completion. California DMV may require it as proof the Emissions Recall Campaign was done.

I will definitley get this done when i get back then.
I'll forward the letter excerpt to BMW of morristown, Thanks guys! |
I just got the same letter today right after dropping-off the X5 at the dealers for service tomorrow.
Will have them perform the update. |
Count me in too. I just recieved my letter today. Campaign Number: 10E-A03.
I always thought my transmission shifted quite smoothly as they mention something about the TCU. As long as BMW will pay for parts and labor, why not take it in. I'm just hoping that it won't be one of those "keep it overnight for 1 day" type of visit. I just want to hit the dealer, have some free food and drinks then go home. |
well what kind of recall is this? its just an updated software, do they actually have to replace parts?
I just got a new CPO paid for transmission back in july, i wonder if my tranny ECU needs to be reflashed..either way, i'm going to get whatever needs to be done |
I feel left out. I haven't gotten any recall letters for my '04 N62. But like Naz, I just had a trans put in my X5 this past fall so maybe I've got the latest software too.

I suspect that in order to meet strict California emission standards and in general elsewhere, they'll remap the ECU and TCU to make it drink less gas and spew less emissions. I'm hoping this doesn't affect the overall performance.
